The Holmenes Coastal Sámi Farm, the main site of the Nord-Troms Museum, offers a tangible introduction to Kåfjord’s history. Other visitor experiences range from Sámi culture and an international Indigenous festival to hikes, a coastal fort, and traces of mining. When planning where to stay, you can consider which aspects of the municipality you want to shape your visit.

Cultural Sites and History

The buildings at Holmenes Farm have been restored or reconstructed and returned to their condition around 1930. The farm itself dates from around 1850 and was inhabited until 1964. The permanent exhibition “De čalbmi ii olat guhkibuidda” is on display at the Museum of Northern Peoples, alongside changing exhibitions in the museum gallery.

In Manndalen is the Center for Northern Peoples, a museum of the Coastal Sámi. Its kitchen focuses on local food traditions and serves Coastal Sámi dishes from North Troms. Food can also be ordered for gatherings and celebrations; check ordering options in advance. A cultural trail in Čáhput/Svartskogen leads to local stories and legends of the Manndalen Valley. At the upper end of the valley is the Baalsrud Cave: Jan Baalsrud hid there while escaping from the Germans during World War II.

Festival and Practical Planning

The Riddu-Riđđu Festival takes place annually in Kåfjord and is an international Indigenous festival. The program includes music, courses, performing arts, literature, a children’s festival, a youth camp, seminars, art exhibitions, and film; the selection may vary from one edition to another. The festival takes place mostly outdoors. Ticket holders can pitch a tent for free at a campsite. Check the dates and camping information for the edition you plan to attend.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails

The Ráisduottarháldi Landscape Protection Area includes the municipalities of Kåfjord and Nordreisa. It preserves a distinctive high-mountain area with deposits of great natural-historical importance and provides the public with opportunities for outdoor recreation. Guolasjávri in the Kåfjord Valley is a starting point for trips into the protected area and onward to Reisa National Park; road access is seasonal. To hike to Halti or Ráisduottarháldi, turn off the E6 at Birtavarre and drive through Kåfjorddalen. Factor the seasonal road access into your plans.

The Gorsa Bridge spans a 153-meter-deep gorge in Kåfjorddalen. The marked trail from the parking area above Ankerlia passes the ruins of a mine that operated until 1919. The hike is 1.8 kilometers each way and takes about 25 minutes. The former mining area includes weathered ruins of smelting houses and other buildings, old paths, remains of cableways, and entrances to abandoned mines. Bungee jumping from the bridge is listed as available from June 15 to September 30; advance booking is required. Check availability for your travel dates and road and trail conditions before setting out.

Dalberget is in Djupvik, in the municipality of Kåfjord. The half-day hike leads to a freely accessible cabin with panoramic views of the Lyngen Alps. Spåkenes, on the border between the municipalities of Nordreisa and Kåfjord, has a coastal fort from World War II. Several bunkers and gun emplacements remain and can be explored. Around 60 different bird species have been observed from the birdwatching tower at Spåkenes.
