Hoston: Experience the natural and cultural landscape
Accommodation in Hoston
If you’d like to combine natural and cultural landscapes with specific leisure ideas, Hoston offers several options: a nature and culture trail in the town centre, cross-country skiing opportunities, and activities at nearby Hostovatnet. The 3.5 km trail starts in the town centre, where there is also a car park. The route runs mainly through agricultural land and old, grazed cultural landscapes. Activities on the lake and hiking trails around Berge Gård offer additional options for planning your trip.
Nature and culture trail in the town centre
Along the trail are the ruins of several old smallholdings, summer barns and stone walls. The route therefore passes not only through agricultural land, but also by tangible remnants of earlier land use. The different features—farm ruins, barn buildings and walls—provide several visible points of reference in the cultural landscape. The trail is marked with posts, arrows and map overviews. Individual signs and maps complement each other as navigation aids along the route. The 3.5 km route brings these features together in a single nature and culture trail. If you’re particularly interested in the interplay between the landscape and traces of historic buildings, this part of planning a trip to Hoston is especially relevant.
Cross-country skiing and route planning
Hoston has an approximately 25 km illuminated ski trail, as well as other regularly groomed ski tracks. Compared with the 3.5 km nature and culture trail, the ski trail is considerably longer. The two figures refer to different activities: cross-country skiing here, and a route through the cultural landscape there. A recreation trails plan, adopted on 16 September 2025, lists a car park in Hoston sentrum and a car park at the illuminated ski trail. It names IL Fjellmann as the operator of the ski trail. Since the ski tracks are seasonal, it’s worth checking their current condition before your trip.
The “Hostovatnet rundt” run is also associated with Hoston. If you’d like to plan your trip around this run, check the event dates in advance.
Hostovatnet: Swimming area and activities on the lake
Nearby Hostovatnet is suitable for fishing and boat trips. At the eastern end of the lake, just below Hoston, there is a developed swimming area of about one dekar, owned by the municipality. A 2025 municipal plan lists the swimming area as an existing destination with a car park and toilet. Check the current conditions before visiting if you’d like to include this information in your plans.
An ice-fishing competition is held on Hostovatnet every year. It is organised by IL Fjellmann and attracts visitors from near and far. If you’d like to travel to Hoston for the competition, check the dates for the relevant event. This lets you plan your trip around a specific event, while fishing and boat trips remain other activities available on the lake.
Hiking nearby
There are many hiking opportunities around Berge Gård, including on old trails. This complements the nature and culture trail in the town centre with a different connection to the landscape: there, a set route length and features such as summer barns and stone walls are part of the route; around Berge Gård, the focus is on nearby hiking options and old trails. If you’re considering Hoston as a destination, these differences can help you choose—depending on whether you’re more interested in the marked cultural trail, cross-country skiing, activities on the lake or hiking.
