Oppdal offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: a rail connection and cultural attractions in town, as well as historic sites and seasonal activities across the wider Oppdal destination. Then compare the location of each hotel with the places and activities you plan to visit.

Rail Travel and Culture in Town

Oppdal Station is on the Dovre Line. Trains run from there towards Trondheim and Oslo S. If you plan to travel by train, you can factor this connection into your trip planning; check specific departures and tickets for your travel dates.

Oppdal Museum, an open-air museum with more than 20 historic buildings, lies north of the town centre. It shows life in Oppdal from the 16th century to the present day. Historic farmhouses, barns, storehouses, smithies and mountain farms illustrate Norwegian architecture, everyday life and craftsmanship. The collection brings together different types of buildings and the themes they illustrate: how people lived and worked, and the craftsmanship of earlier times.

Oppdal Kulturhus is in the town centre and hosts concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, exhibitions and other activities throughout the year. The town thus offers two distinct cultural attractions: the museum focuses on historic buildings and ways of life, while the cultural centre offers a year-round programme of events. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates during your stay.

History Across the Wider Oppdal Destination

The wider Oppdal destination includes the Vang burial ground, with more than 900 large and small burial mounds and stone heaps. The site has a service building, information boards, a two-kilometre walking path and information cubes. For 2026, the municipality advises against visiting while clean-up and safety work is under way.

Oppdal Church and its surroundings also offer historical points of interest. The King’s Road over Dovrefjell runs through Drivdalen to Oppdal Church. The present-day church was built around 1650 and consecrated by Bishop Erik Bredal on 12 March 1651. Its baptistery features stave construction from the 12th century, decorated with painted apostles. Raulåna stands by the church at Vang and was built in 1675. The route, the church building and the baptistery offer different ways to explore the region’s history.

Skiing, Trails and Other Activities

For alpine skiing, Oppdal Skisenter spans four mountains and has 13 ski lifts and 35 runs. Seasonal operations may change. Vangslia has a children’s slope, two chairlifts, two drag lifts and eleven runs; seasonal availability may also change here. Oppdal Ski Stadium offers four kilometres of groomed trails, including a floodlit route. These facilities offer different types of winter sports: lifts and downhill runs on the one hand, and groomed cross-country ski trails on the other.

The 70-kilometre pilgrimage trail through Oppdal offers another way to experience the destination. It passes through natural landscapes, cultural landscapes and historic surroundings; trail conditions vary by season. The hike to the summit of Storskrymten is listed as 30 kilometres round trip, with 1,400 metres of elevation gain. At 1,985 metres, the mountain is the highest in Oppdal. Conditions on this route also vary seasonally—the distance and elevation figures can help you factor its scale into your plans.

Visitors can set out from Oppdal on a guided Dovrefjell experience. Opplev Oppdal also offers rafting on the Driva River for beginners and experienced participants. In the Stølen and Fagerhaug area, routes from Stølen are nine and 11.5 kilometres long. The Grøtsetra Ski Arena trail network connects with Skaret, Nerskogen, Gjevilvassdalen and Oppdal town centre.

The focus of your search affects the practical planning: cultural attractions in town, events and seasonal activities across the wider destination call for different priorities. If dates or seasonal trail conditions are important to your trip, check them before booking.
