Klæbu combines distinctive architectural history with hiking opportunities and winter ski trails. When looking for a hotel, you can tailor your stay to your interests: church and farm history sit alongside routes through the centre and the natural surroundings. In winter, there are also kilometres of cross-country ski trails.

Churches, farms and cultural history

Klæbu Church is a distinctive octagonal church dating from 1790. Its roof vault is self-supporting, with no interior columns. A simple stave church had stood on the same site since at least 1430. This reveals two distinct building phases: the older church site and the octagonal church with its unusual roof construction.

Klæbu Bygdemuseum is located at Teigen, by Lake Selbusjøen in Klæbu, and consists of a farm complex with seven buildings, most of which were built around 1850. Tanem øvre offers a different architectural focus: it has a large, intact and enclosed farm complex arranged in a square. The rare, well-preserved Nideng Søndre complex is also enclosed in a square. It dates from the early 19th century and retains many original building components, particularly in the dwelling house. The three sites therefore differ in the number and dates of the museum buildings, the enclosed layout at Tanem øvre and the preserved building components at Nideng Søndre.

The cultural environment in Klæbu is also of national importance. Its institutional history extends from the founding of Klæbu seminar in 1839 to the closure of Hallsetheimen in 1991. The cultural environment also illustrates the connection between the two oldest power stations in the Nidelva watercourse and the associated workers’ housing. Together, these sites represent distinct cultural-history themes: church architecture, farm complexes, and the connection between power stations and workers’ housing.

Hiking, ski trails and activities

The six-kilometre Sentrumsrunden circular trail runs through the centre of Klæbu. You can join it at a convenient point. The route passes through the Hallsetområdet and descends through Håggåbekkdalen. Its length and flexible starting point give you two practical considerations when adding a walk through the centre to your day’s plans.

Hiking opportunities are available in Vassfjellet, along the Nidelva and in the forests around Gjenvollhytta. In winter, you’ll find kilometres of cross-country ski trails both in Vassfjellet and in the area around Gjenvollhytta. Vassfjellet and the area around Gjenvollhytta are options for both hiking and skiing, while hiking opportunities are also mentioned along the Nidelva. From Klæbu, you can also reach Kråkfjellet in Brungmarka, the highest peak in Trondheim.

At Klæbu’s bathing spots, you can swim safely in the Nidelva. As water quality can vary, check current conditions before swimming. Klæbu Aktivitetspark offers another specific activity: its main attraction is a large concrete skate park. The surface is suitable for wheeled sports, and the park can be used with wheeled equipment.

To plan your trip, you can start by choosing your focus: churches and farm complexes offer cultural history, the circular trail and hiking opportunities provide outdoor activities, and the ski trails are for winter pursuits. This distinction can help you tailor your search for a hotel in Klæbu to the kind of stay you have in mind.
