Accommodation in Hitra
When planning a trip to Hitra, you can choose to focus on nature, coastal culture, golf or regional history. Specific places to visit include the golf course at Akset, the Kystmuseet in Fillan and the historic trading post at Hopsjø.
Nature, Trails and Golf
Hitra offers varied natural landscapes as well as opportunities for hunting and fishing. There are numerous paths and trails for walks. A dedicated hiking map at a scale of 1:50,000 was revised in 2015; check locally before your trip to find out whether it is available. The Kjentmannsprøven has 45 stations in total: 30 on land and 15 at sea. This means the offer includes both land-based and sea-based stations.
Hitra golfbane in Akset, near Sandstad, offers another way to spend time outdoors. The golf course has nine holes, as well as a driving range and a putting green. Views include the Terningen Lighthouse and the Trondheimsleia. Hitra therefore caters to different interests: walks and exploring nature on the one hand, and a golf course with practice areas on the other.
Coastal Culture and Museums
The Kystmuseet in Fillan combines a visitor centre with two large exhibitions: “The People of Flatvika” and “The Russian Shipwreck”. The exhibitions cover the history and traditions of coastal culture, including life on the coast around 100 years ago and aquaculture. The free exhibition “Ringer i vannet” is on the first floor of the Hitra fast-boat terminal.
Hopsjø also offers a historical connection to the coast. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hopsjø was one of the largest trading posts in Trøndelag. Hopsjøbrygga offers visitors an experience of coastal culture, with a general store, a whaling museum, culinary traditions and a lively quayside. The history and present-day culture of the coast emerge here as different aspects of a visit: Hopsjø’s trading history belongs to an earlier era, while the description of Hopsjøbrygga brings together various cultural elements at the quayside.
Unique Experiences and Regional Products
Nattseilerne offers a photography and sea eagle safari. It departs from Hopsjø Kyst- og Kultursenter and travels aboard a restored old wooden boat into the Frøyfjord between Hitra and Frøya. If you plan to take this tour, check in advance which dates are available.
At DalPro, visitors can feed a deer. The farm shop sells products made from venison and wild sheep meat, including sausages, meatballs, fenalår, pinnekjøtt, shank and fresh meat. Feeding a deer and shopping at the farm shop are two different reasons to visit: one is an activity, while the other is an offering of regional meat products.
