Dolmøy: Churches, Cultural Trails and Water Experiences
Accommodation in Dolmøy
Local highlights include cultural trails, a mooring for boat travellers, as well as diving sites and wildlife watching around Dolmøya. These highlights offer different ways to experience the area.
Church and cultural history
Dolm Church dates from the 13th century and is the region’s only medieval building. On Hitra, it is also one of the oldest buildings on the Trøndelag coast still in use. The medieval church was reconsecrated in 1992. Kystmuseet offers guided tours of Dolm Church and the rectory garden. Dolm Rectory Garden and its associated cultural trails are open to everyone year-round; check for any temporary notices before your visit.
“Dolmen by” is also part of the area’s cultural history. The miniature town comprises about 1,000 houses and was one of Norway’s first miniature towns and amusement parks. For more than 50 years, it attracted visitors from Norway and abroad. In Dolm, two distinct periods of history therefore exist side by side: the church’s medieval history and the miniature town’s long history as a visitor attraction.
On Hitra, the medieval settlement of Dolm lies along the Kystpilegrimsleia. This connection to the pilgrim route adds another perspective on the area to the story of the church and the cultural landscape.
Cultural trails and routes
The old cultural landscape around Dolm Church is suitable for walking, with information boards at several locations. This lets you combine a walk with points of reference in the landscape. A marked trail also leads on from the mooring by Dolm Church. Pedestrians and cyclists can reach Dolm via Dolmøyveien. These route details offer different ways to find your bearings when visiting on foot or by bike.
Mooring, diving and wildlife watching
The floating mooring by Dolm Church has information boards for travellers by boat. You can moor there for short stays. The mooring is therefore both a point of reference for boat travellers and the starting point of the marked trail.
For freediving, the sites are on the east side of Dolmøya, towards Ilsøya. They are about a five-minute boat ride from Dolmsundet Marina, and the depth is 6 to 10 metres. Another dive site is Vættastraumen beneath the old Dolmøy Bridge: it is 15 metres deep and suitable for beginners. The details distinguish the two options: the freediving sites are shallower, while Vættastraumen offers greater depth and is explicitly described as suitable for beginners.
Dolmsundet Marina also offers a boat safari to watch white-tailed eagles and other wildlife around Dolmsundet and Dolmøya. Check before travelling whether the safari is available.
Getting there and finding your way
A bridge over the narrow Dolmsundet connects Dolmøya to Hitra. The Frøya Tunnel on National Road 714 runs from Dolmøya to Frøya. The bridge and tunnel thus provide two different connections: to Hitra and to Frøya. Dolm is accessible via County Road 371; follow the signs to Dolm Church. Pedestrians and cyclists can reach Dolm via Dolmøyveien. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish these directions for getting there from the routes around the church and the activities on the water.
