Linesøya: Cycling Route, Coastal Culture and Local History
Accommodation in Linesøya
Linesøya combines an unusually well-preserved and carefully maintained coastal cultural landscape with a popular cycling route and several cultural and historical points of interest. If you are planning a hotel stay on Linesøya, you can explore these different aspects: a ride around the island, the cultivated landscape, and nature and history. When planning your trip, you can give cycling, landscape and local history different levels of focus.
Cycling on Linesøya
Linesøya rundt is a popular cycling tour on Linesøya. The Åfjord cycling route is about 26 kilometres long and runs from Revsnes via Stokkøya to Linesøya, continuing around the island. The two names reflect different perspectives: the loop around Linesøya and the sequence of places along the Åfjord cycling route. On Linesøya rundt, you can also climb Linesfjellet. To do so, leave your bicycle behind and hike up the mountain; the climb is an optional addition to the ride. Check current route conditions and signage locally before setting out.
Coastal Cultural Landscape and Birdlife
Linesøya is an unusually well-preserved and carefully maintained coastal cultural landscape. This continuity is evident both in the landscape and in how it is managed. The term therefore brings together two aspects that belong in any description of the area: its appearance and its continued use. This is different from the specific cycling route, which describes a ride and its stops. The varied landscape also provides a habitat for seabirds, waders, small birds and birds of prey. Alongside activities and local history, the landscape and birdlife are also themes to explore during your stay.
History Along the Route
Several information boards present specific historical topics. At Ryskardet, one board provides information about the Stone Age on Linesøya; another is titled “Linesøya – Settlements on the Cliffs.” At Lineskaia, an information board about communication is part of the cycling route. The boards connect different local and historical topics with the route. A visit to the local history museum Kjerringrokken can also be part of the loop. The boards and the museum have different roles: the boards present topics along the route, while the museum is a possible stop. In the wider travel destination of Åfjord, Øyholmen on Linesøya is an old wartime aviation radar site; many gun emplacements and remains of the station are still preserved there.
Local Food and Farm Produce
Rorbua is a small pub and café at the Linesøya marina. At Selbekk Gård, you can buy strawberries, vegetables and potatoes directly from the farm. The strawberries from Linesøya come from Selbekk Gård. These are two distinct places to visit: Rorbua is a pub and café at the marina, while Selbekk Gård sells farm produce directly.
