Åfjord: Via Ferrata, Museums and Culture
Accommodation in Åfjord
There are several ways to plan a trip to Åfjord: focus on a via ferrata in the town centre, visit museums and event venues, or enjoy activities across the wider Åfjord destination. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around these interests. It’s worth distinguishing between attractions in the town centre and experiences in other, specifically named locations.
Via ferrata and experiences in the Åfjord destination
Fosen Via Ferrata is a newly built via ferrata in the centre of Åfjord, on Mount Mælanakken. The via ferrata is a distinct activity highlight, alongside the museums and event venues in the town centre.
More experiences across the wider Åfjord destination
Cycling is recommended as a visitor experience on Linesøya. Øyholmen, a former wartime air defence radar site, is also located there. Many gun emplacements and remnants of the station have been preserved. On Stokkøya, Hosnasand offers swimming on an Atlantic beach. In Utro in Roan, the Utrostien trail passes through an old cultural landscape with preserved burial sites and stone fences. Dåapma is a popular summit hiking trail in Åfjord, at an altitude of over 600 metres.
Water activities are also among the options across the wider destination: several providers in Åfjord offer canoes and kayaks for hire. The Nordalselva is designated a national salmon river and offers salmon fishing. Diving in Åfjord municipality offers the chance to explore shipwrecks and caves. These activities cater to different interests, from cycling and hiking to fishing and diving. If you’re planning to hire equipment, check in advance what’s available for your travel dates.
Museums and culture in the town centre
Fredmoen in the centre of Åfjord is run as a museum by Fredmoens Venner. Its interior dates from the early 20th century, and it also contains mementos from the time when an English lord lived there. The Stjern Museum tells the story of the Stjern company, founded in 1953. Visits are by appointment. If you plan to visit both museums, note that they have different focuses: Fredmoen showcases a historic interior and mementos, while the Stjern Museum is devoted to the company’s history.
The Å! activity centre combines a modern cinema with event spaces. The cinema has 70 seats. The Black Box can be used for concerts, performances, seminars and other gatherings, and adapted to different needs. Its mobile amphitheatre has 221 seats and can also host larger events and gatherings. If you’re planning a specific event, it’s a good idea to check the programme and seating arrangements in advance.
Getting around and planning your trip
The Parken shopping centre is located right in the town centre. It has 110 parking spaces, including 60 covered spaces in a car park. On the roof, you’ll find the takParken meeting place, a cageball football pitch, a climbing tower and a viewpoint. As well as museums and event spaces, shopping and parking are among the points of interest described in the town centre.
