Deknepollen – Barrel Factory and Hike on Kletten
Accommodation in Deknepollen
When planning a stay in Deknepollen, first consider whether your main interest is cultural history, a short mountain hike, or activities by the water. Specific points of interest include the former Hagevik Tønnefabrikk, the day-trip cabin on Kletten, the hike to Dalsneset, and Steinvik Camping. These offer different ways to experience the area: industrial history, route planning, and a stay by the shore.
Hagevik Tønnefabrikk: Industrial history by the water
The former Hagevik Tønnefabrikk in Deknepollen is Norway’s only protected barrel factory and has been restored as a museum. Its machinery, production equipment, and quay are fully preserved. The factory is accessible from the sea and has its own stone-built quay. Its protected status, restoration as a museum, and preserved fittings make it particularly interesting to travelers interested in Norwegian industrial history.
The predecessor business, H. Gillesvik Bødkerforretning, was established in Hagevik in 1904. The present-day factory, however, was not built until 1928–1930, following fires in 1921 and 1927. Thus, 1904 marks the start of the predecessor business, not the construction date of the present-day factory. This distinction in dates helps separate the company’s earlier history from the later construction of the factory that survives today.
Hiking on Kletten and to Dalsneset
The day-trip cabin on Kletten is at an altitude of 138 m and makes an accessible destination for an easy mountain hike. The quickest route starts in Kulen, Deknepollen. The trail is short but steep; it begins at the main road at the eastern end of Måløybrua, initially passes through spruce forest, and takes just under 30 minutes. From the cabin, you can look out over the fjord, mountains, and sea.
For the hike to Dalsneset, you can park at Rema 1000 in Deknepollen. Then follow the road past Toyota Nordfjord to the first road on the right; the road ends there at a car park with a large brick-built transformer building. As parking options may change, check the situation before your hike.
The two hikes offer different planning considerations: on Kletten, you can consider walking time, elevation, and views together; on the route to Dalsneset, landmarks along the road help with navigation. This lets you weigh up a short route with a view against a route with specific directions to turns and parking.
Shoreline and camping in Deknepollen
Steinvik Camping in Deknepollen has about 200 m of shoreline with fishing spots, a fire pit, tent pitches, and spaces for motorhomes and caravans. Boat rentals are available from a floating dock. For planning, consider the facilities according to your needs: What type of pitch do you need, and is boat rental important for your stay? As facilities and availability may change, check the services that matter to you in advance.
