You can get to know Sørbøvågen through its natural surroundings, harbour and architectural history. Folkestien runs through a spruce forest, while Hamneparken brings together a beach and opportunities for activities. Sørbøvåg Brygge adds a guest harbour to the area’s attractions. Øn kyrkje and the former Sørbøvåg bedehus offer insight into the local history of the church. When planning a hotel stay, you can weigh these different highlights according to your interests.

Folkestien and Sørbøheia

Folkestien is a well-maintained gravel path through a spruce forest. It can be started from five different car parks. This number may change if access arrangements are adjusted, so check the current starting points before setting out. At the end of the forest path on Folkestien stands a shelter built and owned by Øen Helselag, with views over the Åfjorden.

Sørbøheia offers a different view. It lies behind Sørbøfeltet, from where you can walk straight up. From Sørbøheia, the view takes in the Åfjorden, Lihesten and the sea to the west. The forest path and the hill thus offer different local perspectives: the view of the fjord from the shelter and the wider panorama from Sørbøheia.

Beach and harbour

Hamneparken in Sørbøvågen has a beach, an activity park and a volleyball court. The park brings together swimming and opportunities to be active in one place. You can consider it as a destination in its own right when planning your day, alongside the trails and viewpoints.

Sørbøvåg Brygge is a guest harbour with panoramic views over the Åfjorden and Lihesten. The floating concrete jetty or quay has electricity, water, a toilet, shower, washing machine, tumble dryer and Wi-Fi. You can rent bicycles and boats at Sørbøvåg Brygge. Before your trip, check the harbour’s current operations and the availability of facilities and rental options.

Church history in Sørbøvågen

Øn kyrkje is a long church made of brick and concrete in Sørbøvåg on the Åfjorden. Its entrance is on the east side, and the choir is on the west side. Bishop Ragnvald Indrebø consecrated the church on 15 June 1958.

Sørbøvåg bedehus is also part of local history: it probably began operating in autumn 1933 and was used as a church from 1940 until the new church was completed in 1958. Together, the two buildings reflect different chapters in Sørbøvågen’s church history—from the probable start of operations at the bedehus to the consecration of the long church.

Cultural history in the wider destination of Hyllestad

In the wider destination of Hyllestad, the millstone landscape offers another cultural-history highlight. This cultural landscape, made up of garnet mica schist, represents continuous quarrying over more than 1,300 years, dating back to the 8th century. Hyllestad is also home to the largest quarry from the Viking Age and Middle Ages in Norway and Northern Europe. The millstones made there were exported to Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

More historical traces can be found in Hyllestad on the wall of the old cemetery: it contains three Celtic crosses from the early Middle Ages. The section of Den Trondhjemske Postvei that passes through Hyllestad and Fjaler to Langeland is also part of the region’s history. It was part of the route from 1785 to 1868; large sections of the postal road have now been restored. These themes add their own cultural history of the wider destination of Hyllestad to Sørbøvågen’s local trails, harbour and churches.
