In Hyllestad, cultural and pilgrimage history meets hiking destinations. Kvernsteinsparken is an open-air museum run by the Musea i Sogn og Fjordane. The exhibitions are housed in traditional Grind houses with different functions. Family-friendly activities are part of the offerings, as is a museum shop selling goods and gifts from local producers. If you are looking for a hotel in Hyllestad, these different interests may play a role in choosing a destination for your stay.

Kvernsteinsparken and the Old Church Path

The park is on the Kystpilegrimsleia. Visitors can follow signposted hiking trails here year-round; the old church path also leads from Kvernsteinsparken to Hyllestad’s old cemetery. Three Celtic crosses from the early Middle Ages stand at the corners of the cemetery wall. A fourth Celtic cross stone is mounted in today’s Hyllestad Church. The long wooden church was consecrated on November 23, 1880, and is also on the Kystpilegrimsleia.

The paths and access points are also important for finding your way around the museum: a visitor parking lot is located right next to the museum entrance. The lower area of Kvernsteinsparken is relatively level and connected by gravel paths. Parts of the stonecutter’s path and parts of Storehuset are accessible to people with reduced mobility. The specified areas are accessible to people with reduced mobility, but the entire park is not.

Stonecutting history across Hyllestad

The history of millstones also shapes the wider destination of Hyllestad, beyond Kvernsteinsparken. Norway’s and Northern Europe’s largest quarry from the Viking Age and Middle Ages is in Hyllestad. Hyllestad’s cultural landscape, made up of garnet mica schist, documents continuous extraction for more than 1,300 years, dating back to the 8th century. Millstones made in Hyllestad were exported to Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. These regional connections complement a visit to the museum, but are not the same as the exhibitions in the park.

Another historic route through the region is Den Trondhjemske Postvei. The section through Hyllestad and Fjaler to Langeland was part of the route from 1785 to 1868; large parts of the post road have now been restored. In its current condition, the route is best suited to hiking. Some sections are overgrown or steep. Cyclists may therefore have to use County Road 57 for some parts.

Hikes and Excursions in Hyllestad

Hyllestad offers more destinations for hiking enthusiasts. Marked trails and Sherpa steps lead up Lihesten to the plateau; from there, a marked trail continues to Risnesnipa. The hike to 480-meter-high Hesjetinden is considered easy to moderate, is suitable for families, and can be done year-round. From there, you can enjoy views of Åfjord and Lihesten. Sørefjordhytta is a day-use cabin by Sørefjordsvatnet with views of Lihesten; a trail beside the cabin continues to Hesjetinden.

At Indrefjord Gard, farm visits with animal and petting-farm activities, as well as guided horseback rides, are among the local options. Check in advance whether your preferred date is available. In the town center, Hyllestad’s vicarage is open to pilgrims during the summer season. This seasonal access is for pilgrims.

Arriving by Water and Finding a Hotel

There are several things to note when arriving by water. Rysjedalsvika is the nearest boat landing in the destination’s vicinity. A ferry runs from there to Rutledal; a fast boat also operates between Selje and Bergen. Check the current timetable before traveling. On the Kystpilegrimsleia, travelers can combine public boat services with a car or bus and hiking; arriving in a private recreational boat is also possible. For travelers on the route with their own boat, Hyllestad’s guest harbor is the nearest harbor.

You can tailor your search for a hotel in Hyllestad to your interests: Kvernsteinsparken and the old church path offer cultural and pilgrimage history, while Lihesten and Hesjetinden are hiking destinations elsewhere in the area. Consider which of these themes is most important for your stay, then look for a suitable hotel.
