Hella lies on the north shore of the Sognefjord, at the westernmost end of the municipality of Leikanger. The ferry connection across the fjord and hiking trails starting at the ferry quay are key features to consider when planning your trip. The ferry service reflects the history of the connection, while the trails start right at the quay.

Ferry triangle and ferry terminal

The Dragsvik–Hella–Vangsnes ferry triangle opened on 17 October 1956. The ferry between Dragsvik and Vangsnes goes via Hella, so you can use this connection without changing ferries. Vehicles may need to be turned around in Hella. Check the timetable before travelling, as operating details may change. In 2011, the Vangsnes–Hella–Dragsvik route, counting from the east, was the second of four ferry connections across the Sognefjord.

The ferry terminal was also upgraded: around 1987, it received larger vehicle waiting areas and improved quay facilities. In 1992, the area west of the kiosk and restroom facilities at the Hella ferry quay was landscaped with natural stone, lush shrubs and trees, and a very large play ferry for children.

Hiking trails and local history

A hike to 1,024-metre-high Vassvarden starts right next to the ferry quay. The cultural history walking route “Kulturhistorisk løype i Leikanger – Eitorn” also starts at the quay. The two trails have different focuses: one hike has Vassvarden as its named high-altitude destination, while the other is designated as a cultural history route. Check trail conditions locally; on the cultural route, also pay attention to the signage and terrain.

The Hella farm, also known as Hellen, is first mentioned in 1667. Farming and salmon fishing were carried out at Hella until around 1960. Near Hella, you can also see a land-based salmon fishing installation called “Laksegilja ved Hella.” The history of the farm and fishing thus comes together in the same place with the later development of the ferry and terminal.

Location for trip planning

Hella is the closest ferry quay to Leikanger, about a 12-minute drive away. Road conditions may affect travel time. Along with the hiking trails that start right at the quay, this location makes Hella easy to consider as a destination with a ferry connection and trails nearby.
