When planning a trip to Bremanger, the coastal landscape, hiking and historic sites offer different possible focal points. Grotlesanden and Vetvika present different coastal scenery; Veten has a day-trip cabin, and traces of earlier settlement can be found at Grotle and Vetvika. The time required and visiting conditions also vary by destination. This can help you decide which themes will shape your trip.

Beaches and Coastal Scenery

Grotlesanden lies at the tip of Grotle on Bremangerlandet. The beach has several hundred metres of fine white sand and offers unobstructed views of the open sea. The hike to Veten also starts at Grotlesanden. This gives you a clearly identified place to include both the beach and the hiking trailhead in your travel plans.

Vetvika offers a different experience: the bay has a chalk-white beach, azure sea, green slopes, sand dunes and sheer black cliffs. Conditions for surfing are often good there. While Grotlesanden is associated with sand and sea views, Vetvika adds surfing conditions as a distinct focus alongside its beach and coastal scenery.

Hikes to Veten and Vetvika

Vetehytta, a cabin for day trips with views of the open sea, stands on Veten. The hike to the cabin takes about two hours at a moderate pace. The trail to Veten starts at Grotlesanden. The starting point, approximate duration and destination provide practical guidance for planning an excursion.

Another hike follows a three-hour mountain trail from Svarstad on Bremangerlandet to Vetvika. Across the wider Bremanger destination, trail conditions on this route depend on the weather. The hikes therefore provide a time comparison: about two hours at a moderate pace to Vetehytta, and three hours along the mountain trail to Vetvika.

History in Vetvika and Grotle

Vetvika was completely abandoned in 1951. Ruins of old farms and telephone poles remain, along with a protected cemetery containing nine graves. The visible traces of earlier settlement are part of the area’s character, alongside its beach and coastal landscapes.

Grotle also offers historic points of interest. The old cemetery at Grotle, Gamle Grotle kyrkjegard, contains graves dating from the Middle Ages. The old church at Grotle dates from the 14th century; the cemetery remained in use until 1902. These dates give a visit its own focus on cultural history.

More to Explore in the Wider Bremanger Destination

In the wider Bremanger destination, the outer part of Bremangerlandet is characterised by open sea, white beaches and steep mountains that descend directly into the sea. Bremangerlandet is accessible by car on county roads from both Nordfjord and the coast. Two directions for travelling by car are therefore identified.

Vingen offers another cultural-history focus in the wider Bremanger destination: it has more than 2,300 rock carvings dating back about 7,000 years. Vingen is one of the largest sites for rock carvings in the Nordic region. Access to Vingen, including landing by boat and mooring at the quay, is permitted only as part of organised guided tours. Plan your visit as a guided tour and check the dates in advance.

The Tongane coastal fort includes bunkers, buildings and a Second World War cannon overlooking the coastal landscape. You can explore the freely accessible outdoor area independently via paths with information boards. Local conditions may change; check them before your visit.
