Nedstrand brings together the history of the timber trade and the Romanifolket with hiking trails, forest landscapes and fjord-side coastal settlements. Cultural history, views and time on the beaches of Leirå offer different ways to shape your trip. Each place also tells its own part of Nedstrand’s history and landscape.

Cultural history across several locations

The Nedstrand local museum presents the history of the timber trade in the Ryfylke fjords during the 16th and 17th centuries. It consists of several separate exhibitions in and around Stranda in Nedstrand. In summer, the Nedstrand Museum and the history association host visitors; you can get in touch to arrange group tours.

Romanivillaen is a valuable cultural heritage site and one of the few buildings in Norway connected with the history of the Romanifolket. In the early 20th century, it was moved to its current location at the Øverland farm in Nedstrand. Near Leiranger are well-preserved stone walls from the foundations of a large boathouse, believed to date from the Viking Age or possibly an even earlier period. Nedstrand Church in Hinderåvåg is also part of the destination’s surroundings; it was consecrated on 15 July 1868.

Leiranger is also home to a well-hidden natural harbour cove with a narrow entrance on the north side of the Boknafjord. Its strategic location gives this coastal settlement another historical connection. Matløype in Nedstrand is a local food event organised by small producers. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check the current dates before your trip.

Hiking trails, viewpoints and fjord scenery

Popular hiking destinations in southern Nedstrand include Dalvanuten and Stølanuten. The trail starts at Gurigjerde and passes through varied forest and mountain scenery; along the way, there are sweeping views over Ryfylke, the Boknafjord and the mountain regions inland. Another viewpoint is Hest, a 352-metre-high mountain peak in Nedstrand. From there, the view stretches across the Nedstrandsfjord, Ryfylke, Stavanger, Hervik, Utsira and Stord.

Himakånå is another hiking trail in Nedstrand, with magnificent views and access for people of all ages. You can allow around two hours for the round trip. The other trails range from ten-minute walks to full-day hikes. Cycling routes and forest roads are also available.

Tveitskogen has several kilometres of signposted routes and trails for walking and cycling. A protected area along the coastal path preserves the virgin forest untouched. This makes Tveitskogen a distinctive landscape in its own right, alongside the peaks and open fjord views.

Leirå and activities on the water

Leirå is a combined museum and outdoor recreation area in Nedstrand, about one kilometre from Nedstrand centre. It has two long, gently sloping beaches and a beach volleyball court. From Leirå, the path continues along the water or through the forest to the Tunganeset fyr lighthouse. This area therefore brings together beaches, outdoor activities and a route to a named coastal landmark.

The Nedstrandsfjord also offers fishing opportunities, including cod fishing, trolling for mackerel and deep-sea fishing. At its deepest point, the fjord is 709 metres deep. Conditions and local rules may vary if you are planning a fishing trip.
