Discover Erfjord: Fjord, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Erfjord
Erfjord lies in an arm of the Boknafjord. Discover the landscape by the water, on hiking trails and around the historic buildings at Håland. If you are looking for a hotel in Erfjord, these highlights can help you plan your time here around your interests.
Fjord Scenery and Getting There
The Erfjord is 17 kilometres long, including the Tyssefjord. At the inner end of Bogsfjord lies Habn, a sheltered swimming cove facing southwest. In summer, Erfjord is a destination for boat tourists and fjord enthusiasts. Hattavågsholmen, a recreational area, is also located on the Erøy side in the south of Bogsfjord.
Route 13 runs along the eastern side of the Erfjord. At the fjord’s narrowest point, near the mouth of the Tyssefjord, it crosses the water over a suspension bridge. The Erfjord Bridge opened to traffic in 1963. It is 294 metres long, with a main span of 228 metres. The Ryfylke National Tourist Route also crosses the bridge through Erfjord.
Swimming Spot and Trails by the Water
The public beach at Habn has toilets, a barbecue area and tables. The beach is easy to reach on foot from the car park on the Bogsundvegen side; kayaks can be brought ashore there. Conditions on site may change, so check them before your visit.
Erøy Rundt is a varied, easy hike through a vibrant cultural landscape by Bogsfjord and the Erfjord. Along the way, there are views of the Erfjord Bridge at Tednes. A shorter option follows the forest road along Bogsfjord to Hattarvågen. The round trip is listed as taking 1 to 1.5 hours; the route is also suitable for bicycles and pushchairs.
Another option is the easy hike to Kammen: from Erfjord, it covers 3.8 kilometres round trip. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Erfjord hiking map can be downloaded and is available from the Suldal Tourist Information Office and selected shops; check availability before travelling.
Hålandselva is also part of the fjord landscape. It flows into the fjord at Hålandsosen and is home to salmon. Whether salmon migrate upstream depends on high water levels.
Hålandstunet and the History of Erfjord
Hålandstunet is one of the prominent farms in Erfjord and is run by the Ryfylke Museum. The restored farmstead now comprises three buildings: Målastova, Homannsbua and the main house. The ceiling paintings and remnants of Gregorian notation on the walls are well preserved in Målastova.
The main house offers a glimpse into life on a large farm and the living conditions of the more affluent members of the village community. Of the Ryfylke Museum’s historic buildings, it is the best furnished and equipped. The Håland Bible, an edition from 1550, was found behind wall panelling at Håland in 1913 and is now kept in storage.
Erfjord Church, a wooden long church dating from 1877, stands in Hålandsosen. Together with Hålandstunet, it illustrates different aspects of local architectural and cultural history.
When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance time by the water, a hike and the historic sites at Håland. Use these interests as a starting point when looking for a hotel in Erfjord.
