Hommersåk between fjord, coast and hiking trails
Accommodation in Hommersåk
Hommersåk lies at the inner end of the Riskafjorden. The fjord arm extends about three kilometres southeast from the mouth of the Gandsfjorden, between the mainland and the island of Uskjo (Usken). A sheltered saltwater bathing spot, walking paths and longer hiking routes offer a range of ways to spend your stay. When looking for a hotel in Hommersåk, you can first consider whether you want to focus on the coast, nature trails, local history or a hike to Lifjell.
Coast and trails in Hommersåk
Breivik is a sheltered saltwater bathing spot in Hommersåk, with rocks and a sandy beach. The Ulsneset recreation area lies at the outer end of the Hommersåkvågen and offers walks through protected woodland and open areas. The circular loop at Ulsneset is 735 metres long and has a maximum gradient of 1:6. There are two trailheads at car parks along Breivikveien.
At eight kilometres, the Hommersåkruta is considerably longer. The green route starts at Stemmen in the centre of Hommersåk and follows the Frøylandsvatnet on the way to Eskemyr. Its surface alternates between gravel and asphalt. Comparing the loop and the route makes distance and surface useful considerations when planning your day.
Churches and coastal history
Riska Church was inaugurated in 1999. It is a modern, functional parish church that sees plenty of activity throughout the week. Riska Old Church is a wooden church built in 1877. At Hommersåk kai, Sandnes’s only surviving group of several boathouses at a quay has been preserved. Local history also includes a small settlement of cabins dating from the interwar period on the hillside behind Øykhagen; it includes a Jær house-style cabin.
Hike to Lifjell and getting there
A hike from Hommersåk to Lifjell offers views of the Gandsfjorden, the North Sea, Nord-Jæren, Riska and Ryfylke. To reach the Lifjell hiking trail, you can take the scheduled boat from Fiskepirterminalen in Stavanger to Hommersåk. Bus 21 from Sandnes bus station to Hommersåk kai is another option; check departure times before travelling. The MS Riskafjord II is based in Hommersåk; the total journey time is calculated from its departure there until its return.
