Ualand: Archaeology, Farms and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Ualand
Ualand offers several ways to shape your stay: burial mounds and traces of settlements, a restored farmstead, a hiking route along a disused railway section, and a park in the town centre. These themes are quite distinct. You can plan your trip according to whether archaeological traces, historic buildings, outdoor trails or activities in the centre are your main focus.
Archaeology and historic buildings
Ualandsmarkje has a field of burial mounds and traces of settlements. At Hellerstunet, the history goes back as far as 10,000 years, to the Early Stone Age; there are also traces of an earlier settlement there. Those interested in Ualand’s early history will find two different points of interest at these locations: a field of burial mounds and a settlement history reaching far back in time.
Hellerstunet is also a restored farmstead. It comprises several new buildings, as well as an old cowshed from the 19th century and a barn with a hayloft from the 20th century. The two buildings date from different centuries; they offer visitors another perspective on the place through its buildings, while its history stretches much further back. Meals are also served in a historic setting at Hellerstunet. If you plan to take advantage of this, check in advance when it is available.
Lensmannsgården is part of Ualand’s richly landscaped cultural landscape. This includes an associated water channel system and cultural heritage sites from the 19th century. Alongside the settlement traces and historic buildings at Hellerstunet, the designed cultural landscape is another point of interest: the water channel and heritage sites are part of this theme.
Hiking trails and special places
Drangsdalen is a hiking route between Moi and Ualand that follows a disused railway section. Tunnels, bridges and viewpoints define the route. This sets it apart from the historic sites when planning a trip: the former railway section and the features along the route shape the character of the trail. As trail conditions can vary seasonally, it is a good idea to check them before setting out.
Røverhola is associated with a different kind of local history. This hollow rock formation lies along a path in Ualand’s landscape; according to legend, robbers are said to have sought shelter there. The story is a legend, not verified history. At Røverhola, the rock formation and the traditional tale take centre stage, while the burial mounds and settlement traces tell of archaeological evidence.
At Hellerstunet, a footpath leads to Singestein, about 200 metres away. When struck with a stone, it produces a ringing tone. Singestein adds a natural phenomenon that can be experienced through sound to the historic perspective on Hellerstunet. Helgetoppen and Ruglehei are also mentioned as beautiful hiking areas in Heskestad/Ualand.
Park and activities in the centre
A green park in the centre of Ualand brings together relaxation and activities. The park includes a pump track and a sand volleyball court. This gives the park a different focus from the archaeological sites and hiking trails: here, movement and the green surroundings are at the heart of things. These specific amenities offer another point of reference if you would like to include different sides of Ualand in your trip plans.
