Nærbø: Culture, Trails and Landscape
Accommodation in Nærbø
Nærbø combines insights into Jæren’s rural history with opportunities for walks and hikes, as well as green spaces in the centre. The different highlights can help you choose where to go: Vitengarden focuses on museums and science, Hanabergsmarka combines cultural history with outdoor trails, and Nærbøparken is a meeting place in the town.
Museum and science at Vitengarden
Vitengarden is a combined museum and science centre dedicated to the rural history of the Jæren region. In the “Technology and Landscape” exhibition, you can explore how the Jæren landscape has changed and try out technologies that have contributed to those changes. The visit offers a way to discover both the landscape and the technologies used to transform it.
Farm life also includes seeing animals typical of a farm in Jæren: visitors to Vitengarden can see cows, chickens, geese, pigs and sheep. These encounters with farm animals complement the historical and scientific themes of the exhibitions. Vitengarden is about 1.5 kilometres from Nærbø station on foot or by bicycle.
Hiking and landscape in Hanabergsmarka
Hanabergsmarka is a cultural and outdoor area with opportunities for hiking in all weather and throughout the year. A 2.5-kilometre circular walk leads from Vitengarden through the forest, over Hanaberget and back to the starting point. This makes it possible to combine a well-defined circular walk with a museum visit, while keeping the two experiences distinct: one focuses on exhibitions and history, the other on a trail through the landscape.
The gravel path along Kviamyra leads up to Hanaberget. At 51 metres, it is the highest point in the area. From there, the view extends west over the sea and the modern agricultural landscape of Låg-Jæren, Nærbø and Vitengarden. Hanabergsmarka also has orienteering checkpoints with QR codes. You can download orienteering maps or get them at the Vitengarden reception.
Another option is the trail along Dalabekken. It is one of the Norwegian Trekking Association’s short hikes and is marked in both directions with red T-markers from Nærbøparken. The trail information varies: the circular walk through Hanabergsmarka is listed as 2.5 kilometres long, while the Dalabekken trail is described as a short hike.
Park and activities at Dalabekken
Nærbøparken is a green park and a meeting place in the centre of Nærbø. There is also a large playground and a disc golf course along Dalabekken. Together, these places offer different ways to spend time outdoors: in the park in the centre, on the path by the stream, or enjoying activities there with a particular purpose in mind. The names of the individual places and trails can help you find your way around and distinguish between these options.
More to discover in the wider destination of Hå
Beyond Nærbø, the wider destination of Hå offers further cultural and landscape highlights. Hå gamle prestegard has a contemporary art gallery and historical exhibitions. Its café serves homemade food made with local ingredients. Since the late Middle Ages, Hå gamle prestegard has served as an overnight stop for travellers; this is a historical description of the place, not a statement about accommodation available there today.
Trails and coastal landscapes are also part of Hå. The Kongevegen partly follows the tracks of a prehistoric sunken road and the historic Kongevegen from the 17th century; a map and route description are available at kart.stikkut.no. Ognasanden is a reference area for dune coastline along the Jæren beaches and is protected for its landscape and plant life. Refsnesstranda is a protected dune coastline with rare vegetation types and species, from the outer dunes to the inner dune heath. The landscape at Kvassheimstranda is protected; Kvassheimbukta is protected for birds and has Ramsar status.
