Vesterøy is the first island you reach after leaving the mainland. If you’re looking for a hotel on Vesterøy, the cycling route, coastal path, art venues, fishing harbors and landscape can help you decide how to shape your stay. The route details are as specific as the studios and galleries of local artists.

Cycling loop, coastal path and climbing spots

The Vesterøy cycling route is a 12.5-kilometer loop. It is mostly flat, with a few longer, gentle inclines. The six-kilometer coastal path follows a different route: it runs along the sea from Papperhavn to Kuvauen, continues via Guttormsvauen and ends in Utgård. This distinguishes a loop with a described terrain profile from a coastal path with named start and end points.

The path to Guttormsvauen passes a 15-meter-high cliff equipped for climbing with bolted protection. If you’d like to climb there, check the conditions and access locally. Kuvauen is a popular bouldering spot; you should also check conditions and access there locally. Guttormsvauen also has a large, sheltered beach with shallow water.

Art and harbor towns

Near Hauge, the Art Road comprises studios and galleries belonging to local artists. Their work ranges from ceramics, glass and jewelry to wood carvings, textiles and tapestries. Established galleries are open every summer; the availability of individual venues may vary. If you plan to visit on specific days, it’s a good idea to check their opening hours.

Åse and Oluf Føinum live, work and sell their creations at Føinum pottery and glass art; individual opening arrangements may vary. Galleri Svalgangen exhibits watercolors by local artist Arild Ådnem, though exhibition details may change. Flyndreflat presents ceramics with distinctive maritime motifs, including flatfish and well-fed seagulls. The art venues therefore focus on different things: from the range of artistic disciplines along the Art Road to watercolors and maritime-themed ceramics.

The harbor towns also differ. Bukta and Papperhavn are old fishing harbors. Utgårdskilen is the largest fishing harbor east of Lindesnes and is known for fresh Hvaler shrimp. Availability of the shrimp may vary.

An overview of the landscape on Vesterøy and Hvaler

Large areas of land in western Vesterøy lie within Ytre Hvaler National Park. Recreation areas there include deep forests, smooth, polished rocks and beaches. Vesterøy is also home to Hvaler’s highest point. The Kuvauen area features gneiss, diabase dikes and pegmatite fields. Sheltered historic boathouses stand by the bay, where fishermen used to mend their nets. The area’s geology and coastal history are evident here in distinct, tangible forms.

The wider Hvaler destination includes Ytre Hvaler National Park, which covers 354 km² of coast and archipelago and is Norway’s first marine national park. Its network of trails is suitable for hiking; the Coastal Trail (Kyststien) is part of the adapted trail system. This regional information adds a broader view of Hvaler to Vesterøy’s own routes and landscape features.
