Discover Lesja
Accommodation in Lesja
Lesja brings together church art, archaeological traces and insights into earlier ways of life, with trails through the cultural landscape. When planning your stay, you can compare the different highlights: a visit focused on history and craftsmanship offers a different experience from a hike to the Tussheimbue day cabin. The trails also vary in route and length.
Church art, archaeology and museum life
Lesja Church is a wooden church built in 1749. It is automatically protected as a listed cultural monument dating from 1650 to 1850. Its altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of Norwegian church art and woodcarving, and was made by the renowned woodcarver Jakob B. Klukstad. Guided tours of the church are offered daily at 1 p.m.; it is occasionally closed to the public for private ceremonies. Before your visit, check whether a tour is taking place that day.
Another way to explore the past is at Aurtandefeltet in central Lesja. This archaeological landscape includes burial mounds and house foundations from the Viking Age. Together with the church, it creates a contrast between a historic church interior and traces of a much older settlement.
Lesja Bygdemuseum in Lesja sentrum comprises twelve buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. They illustrate earlier building methods, ways of living and living conditions. As an open-air museum, it also features exhibitions on reindeer hunting, fishing traditions and the story behind Norway’s first national park. Several permanent exhibitions focus, among other things, on crafts and handicrafts, clothing, toys and folk art. The programme also includes baking traditional types of bread from the region.
Hiking trails and Tussheimbue
The hike to the Tussheimbue day cabin starts at a signposted trailhead in Lesja sentrum. The ascent is about three kilometres long. Information boards along the trail provide information about reindeer. As trail markers or trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest guidance before setting out.
The architecturally designed day cabin is open to everyone and offers views across Lesja’s cultural landscape and Reinheimen National Park. A permanently mounted telescope may allow you to spot reindeer on the snowfields on the other side of Lesja. However, a sighting is only a possibility, not a certainty. The cabin, the views and the information boards connect the trail with an insight into the world of reindeer.
The Valldalsleden also passes through Lesja sentrum. Nearby, it runs along Lesjaleira, a wetland used for agriculture and rich in birdlife, before reaching the centre. In terms of the landscape described, this trail differs from the ascent to Tussheimbue, which is associated with a day cabin and the subject of reindeer.
More trails within the wider Lesja destination
At the level of the wider Lesja destination, the Valldalsleden runs from Sylte in Valldal through Reinheimen National Park and Lesja to Dombås. Within Lesja, the route passes through Brøstdalen behind Rånåkollen and continues to Einbu. The trail can therefore be viewed both as a route through Lesja sentrum and as part of the longer route.
Other circular trails differ in length and subject matter. The nature and culture trail on Dalsida is ten kilometres long and has 28 information boards about how people and animals have lived together with their surroundings. The cultural trail at Lesjaverk is a shorter 1.5-kilometre loop. These details help distinguish the two trail types by length and content, without conflating them with the hike to Tussheimbue.
The wider Lesja destination lies between Reinheimen National Park to the west and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park to the east. Travel can also be considered at this broader level: the Rauma Line runs through Lesja municipality, and trains stop at Lesja station on request. Check the current timetable before travelling. This lets you consider cultural attractions in the village and trails across the wider destination as separate highlights for your stay.
