Storvik combines a long sand beach with a distinctive landmark for a stay on the coast: at the Storvika rest area, a stone arch bridge leads down to a sand beach about one kilometre long. The Fjord Route also passes the beach. When looking for a hotel for your trip to Storvik, you can consider whether beach time, cycling, or both will be the focus.

Beach and rest area in Storvika

Storvikstranda is an easily accessible sand beach in Storvika. The long, wide beach has a soft sandy seabed that extends into the sea and creates good conditions for swimming. This makes the beach and swimming the focus of this stretch of coast.

The Storvika rest area complements the beach with practical facilities: the toilets are open year-round, and there is also a waste-disposal facility for motorhomes. BUA Storvik is located at the reception of the Storviksanden campsite. Equipment can be collected and returned by arrangement.

Cycling and exploring the area

Cyclists have an option for avoiding the Storvik Tunnel: they can take the old road over the mountain pass. The Fjord Route continues from Reipå towards Inndyr and passes Storvika beach, offering a beach stop along the way. The route and the coast can thus be considered two aspects of the same trip: the route passes the beach, while Storvika offers an opportunity to spend time by the sea.

Nearby, Finnesgjuran lies just below the summit of Finnesfjellet on the descent. The formation consists of rock towers about 25 metres high, at an elevation of around 250 metres. It is considered a striking sight, especially in the evening sun or in winter under a full moon. Here, the focus shifts from the open beach landscape to a different landform: rock towers on the mountain.

The wider destination of Gildeskål includes other distinct destinations. Langsanden is on Sandhornøy in Gildeskål and is a snow-white sand beach, almost 2 km long and 300 m wide. It is suitable for a seaside walk year-round. By comparison, the beach below the Storvika rest area is about one kilometre long and connected to the Fjord Route; Langsanden offers a different scale for a coastal walk.

Gildeskål kirkested is home to a medieval church with one of Norway’s best-preserved Baroque interiors. From the church hill, the view extends across islands and the shipping route. The Prestegårdsfjøset also houses a Nordland Museum exhibition about Elias Blix. Church architecture, views, and the exhibition offer different points of interest within Gildeskål.

Ureddplassen is also one of the destinations in Gildeskål: the rest area on the Helgeland Coast National Tourist Route also serves as a war memorial. The site includes a 9 m-wide terrace overlooking the fjord, a marble bench, and a stepped amphitheatre leading down to the waterfront. The views, memorial character, and design of the rest area each give this place its own distinctive character.
