Vangshylla: Local History and Cultural Trail
Accommodation in Vangshylla
Vangshylla combines an early settlement history with historic transport routes and a cultural trail along the coast.
Local History Between a Smallholding and a Farm
Vangshylla originally developed from a smallholding and a few boat sheds belonging to the farms at Vang. The smallholding was first mentioned as early as 1661; by 1790, it had developed into a small farm. The two years therefore mark different stages: the early mention of the smallholding and its later development into a farm.
Historic Routes and Fjord Traffic
From the early 19th century, an old path led uphill from Vangshylla through the slopes; it was the first public road in this area. A station for horse transport was also established early on, from which journeys across the Skarnsundet were arranged. A new road to Vangshylla was completed in 1930. Shortly afterwards, a landing stage for scheduled fjord traffic was built there. Scheduled boats, including those from Trondheim, called at Vangshylla until around 1952. The period thus stretches from the routes of the early 19th century to the boat calls around 1952.
Cultural Trails and Getting Your Bearings
The Straumen–Vangshylla cultural trail on Inderøy runs along the coast and offers cultural, historical and botanical points of interest. Around 50 information boards explain historic sites, plants, animals and the people who lived here. Parking is available at Vangshylla along the cultural trail. The Utøy cultural trail runs between Straumen and Vangshylla on Inderøy.
