Rovde offers several hiking destinations with different landscapes: Skåratinden is a relatively isolated mountain with views in every direction. On the ascent along the Åsevegen trail, the view extends as far as Åramsundet; on the hike to Storehornet, you can see over Rovde and the fjord towards Ulsteinvik. If you are planning a stay, you can take these viewpoints and the respective trailheads into account. This makes it possible to distinguish the described hikes by their specific features rather than treating them as a single hiking experience.

The Trail to Skåratinden

The hiking trail up Skåratinden starts at the end of the road in Årskogdalen. From there, it leads to Lake Myrkevatnet and then over the mountain ridge to the summit. The route description thus provides a clear sequence of landscape features: first the end of the valley, then the lake, and finally the ascent over the ridge. At the top, the relatively isolated mountain offers impressive views in every direction.

For directions by car, the access road to Årskogdalen branches off from the main road in Rovde; there is good parking at the end of the road. The turnoff to Skåratinden is signposted on the main road about 150 metres west of the COOP store. These details distinguish the signposted turnoff on the main road from the hiking trail’s starting point at the end of the road.

Åsevegen and Other Hiking Views

The Åsevegen trail starts in the centre of Rovde and offers good views as far as Åramsundet on the ascent. For this trail, you can park at Coop Marked on County Road 652 (FV652) or at the Rovde football ground. The view towards Åramsundet and the two parking options provide practical guidance for choosing and preparing for this hike.

The Rovde–Breiteigsfjella route offers a different landscape: it passes through easy terrain and opens up wide views for most of the hike. By contrast, Åramsundet is a specifically named viewpoint on the Åsevegen trail. When comparing the trails, you can therefore distinguish between a named viewpoint and wide views along most of a route. On the hike to Storehornet, the view extends over Rovde and the fjord towards Ulsteinvik. Together, these descriptions show different viewing directions without combining the trails into a single route.

Regional Highlights in the Wider Destination of Vanylven

Vanylven lies between Stad and Ålesund and can be included in a round trip through north-western Norway. Tourist information for the wider destination points to Destinasjon Vanylven, tours and outdoor activities, as well as StikkUt. The viewpoints mentioned there include Tusshornet, with views over the entire Vanylvsfjord, and Hakalletrappa. From Hakalletrappa, the view takes in the open sea, the Stad peninsula with Vestkapp, and the coastal islands between Runde and Stad.

Culture and history are also part of the region’s offerings: St. Jetmund’s Church in Åheim is one of Norway’s oldest stone churches and was built around 1150. The local community uses it for services and events. The old olivine quarries can be explored along the Åheimselva. The drive from Ålesund to Hakallestranda involves two ferry crossings; the route via Stryn does not require any ferries. Check the ferry timetable before travelling.
