Eide: Cultural Heritage and Routes in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Eide
Around Eide, you’ll find archaeological sites and historic traces, as well as cycling and hiking trails through the surrounding area. Fiskåholmen, Fiskåosen, and Fiskå offer different points of interest, from archaeological finds to local history.
Archaeological finds and local history
In the area around Eide, archaeological excavations at Fiskåholmen uncovered a woman’s grave from the Migration Period, dated to around 500 to 600 AD. At Fiskåosen, postholes from a longhouse were found; the structure is estimated to be 2,000 to 2,300 years old. The two sites therefore represent different historical periods.
Fiskå’s history is also part of the region’s story: the village was once an important trading post and central hub in Vanylven. The road between Eidså and Fiskå was designated a main road and postal road in 1825. Fiskå has boathouses and old buildings, many of which have stood for more than 100 years. Together, these points of interest span archaeological finds, trading history, and historic buildings.
Cycling routes between villages and landscapes
The nearby Nørdsjø Road via Kilebrekka is just under 32 kilometers long and passes through Eidså, Fiskå, Sylte, and Syvde. Most of the route follows quiet paved roads; some sections use busier paved roads or gravel roads. The landscapes along the way include nature and well-preserved cultural landscapes. When planning, both the distance and the different road surfaces are therefore relevant.
On the nearby Hovda rundt cycling route, you can ride mostly along the old main road between Fiskå and Koparneset. It runs between houses and largely follows the former coastline from shortly after the last Ice Age. On another section, the ride leads from Fiskå through a broad, open agricultural landscape to Eidså. The route therefore combines the historic road alignment with a transition to open farmland.
Hike to Vorakinna
The nearby family hike from Fiskåbrauta passes through gentle terrain on its way to the summit of Vorakinna. The trail to Vorakinna is reached via the old road towards Eide and Rusta; at the junction, a sign points to both places. If you are planning this hike, check the current conditions before setting out.
Vanylven as the wider regional setting
The wider destination of Vanylven offers more ideas for planning your trip. Vanylven lies between Stad and Ålesund and can be included in a round trip through Northwest Norway. For visitor information, the municipality lists Destinasjon Vanylven, Tours and Outdoor Activities, and StikkUT.
In Åheim, in Vanylven, stands St. Jetmund’s Church, one of Norway’s oldest stone churches, built around 1150. The local community uses it for services and events. You can also explore the old olivine quarries along the Åheimselva in Vanylven. These cultural heritage sites each have their own history, distinct from the archaeological sites at Fiskåholmen and Fiskåosen.
Vanylven’s viewpoints include Tusshornet, with views across the entire Vanylvsfjord, and Hakalletrappa. From there, you can see the open sea, the Stad peninsula with Vestkapp, and the coastal islands between Runde and Stad. If Hakallestranda is part of your trip to Vanylven, note the different travel options: the drive from Ålesund includes two ferry crossings, while the route via Stryn does not require any ferries. Check the ferry timetable when planning your crossing.
