Haddal: Hiking Trails, Peaks and Coast
Accommodation in Haddal
If you are considering Haddal as a destination for a stay, you will find specific starting points for hikes: the Blåtind–Kongsvollen and Garnestua routes begin in the village or at its built-up edge. The routes also offer views of the Sunnmørsalpane, the sea and the islands, and Haddal has a small sandy beach. When choosing your destination, therefore, consider whether you would prefer to include the summit route, another hike, or the coastal landscape in your stay.
Hiking to Blåtind and Kongsvollen
The Blåtind–Kongsvollen route begins just above Haddal’s built-up area. The path is clearly visible throughout, and at Hundelaupsvatnet, signposts point the way to Blåtind and Kongsvollen. This gives you two clearly named destinations to choose from. Blåtind is 697 metres high and the highest mountain in Ulstein municipality; Kongsvollen reaches 683 metres and is the highest mountain in Hareid municipality. The route thus leads to two peaks, each considered the highest mountain in a different municipality. Their names, elevations and municipal affiliations help you distinguish between the two destinations when planning.
The trail to Garnestua is a separate hiking option. It begins in a residential area in Haddal, while the Blåtind–Kongsvollen route starts just above the built-up area. These different starting points give you specific reference points when factoring hikes into your stay. If you wish, you can continue from the Blåtind–Kongsvollen route on a longer hike to Løsetvatnet. This means that, alongside the route to the named peaks, you can also choose a longer hike.
Views and a beach in Haddal
The Blåtind–Kongsvollen route offers views in many directions. You can see the Sunnmørsalpane, as well as the sea and the islands. Mountain scenery and maritime views are among the features that make this hiking route distinctive. Haddal also has a small sandy beach. If you would like to include both the hiking route and the beach in your stay, treat them as separate items in your plans. If you plan to swim, it is a good idea to check the current conditions locally.
Getting there and the starting point
Haddal is listed as a stop on bus routes between Ulstein/Herøy and Volda/Ørsta. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting out, as public transport details can change. There is room for a few cars at the starting point of the Blåtind–Kongsvollen route; if you are driving, check the parking situation locally. This lets you plan bus travel and parking at the trailhead separately.
Ulstein as a wider destination
The wider destination of Ulstein offers a broader landscape setting. Its coastal strandflat is characterised by flat lowland terraces and long, flat beaches; steep mountain slopes rise to plateaus at elevations of 300 to 500 metres. In Ulstein, you can also kayak in green fjords with the Sunnmøre Alps as a backdrop, among the islands and skerries off the centre of Ulsteinvik, and on the open sea at Flø. Ulstein offers fishing opportunities in both the sea and freshwater.
Cultural sites are also part of the wider destination of Ulstein: Borgarøya is a historic trading post among the islands and skerries near Ulsteinvik. The Studio Hugo Opdal art gallery in Flø has exhibited works by Norwegian and international artists. Together with the nature-related attractions, these examples show the breadth of Ulstein’s landscape and cultural themes, while the hiking trailheads and small sandy beach are Haddal’s specific points of interest.
