Narrow fjords, flat and fertile valleys, blue glaciers, mighty mountains and wild mountain formations define Sykkylven. There are also museums, archaeological sites and opportunities to discover the landscape on foot, by bike or on the water. When planning your trip, you can combine nature experiences with culture or choose a focus for your days.

Out and about: hiking, cycling and winter sports

The municipal Stikk UT! overview for the 2026 season lists established hiking destinations marked in green, blue and red. Green routes are suitable for most people, blue routes require some hiking experience, and red routes are intended for experienced hikers with good endurance. Check the overview again for future seasons. A different route description covers the trail around Sæssvatna in Jarnes/Ikornnes: it follows a gravel road and a path. This means you will find different information about the trail surface and the level of hiking difficulty.

Cycling is also possible across a variety of landscapes: off-road from the mountains to the fjord, along mountain lakes or the fjord, and at a pump track. The ski school at Fjellsætra offers courses for beginners and advanced skiers in alpine skiing, telemark skiing and snowboarding. Course availability may vary by season. Hiking, cycling and ski courses offer different ways to incorporate physical activity into your travel plans.

Harbor and sea

Sykkylven harbor offers opportunities for swimming, paddling and boating. The Fjølg sauna in the small marina combines a sauna session with a refreshing dip in the sea. Alongside activities on the water, you can choose a sauna and sea swim as experiences in their own right; decide which ones will shape your stay according to your interests.

Museums and local history

The Naturmuseet in Sykkylven presents plants, animals and birds as a mosaic of the surrounding natural landscape. Its MOSAIKK exhibition focuses on the diversity of nature, animal life and birdlife in the coastal fjords of Sunnmøre. The Møbelmuseet tells the story of how Sunnmøre became a center of the furniture industry, with customers around the world. Its permanent exhibition includes furniture from the more than 100-year history of the Norwegian furniture industry, placing this regional perspective within the broader history of the industry. One exhibition area at the Møbelmuseet is accessible; check the details again before your trip.

Archaeological finds offer another glimpse into the area's past. Finds at Aurefløten indicate that it has been inhabited for at least 4,000 years. Aursneset is home to six large burial mounds. Their dating has not been definitively established: they may date either to the Early Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago, or to the Early Iron Age, approximately 300 to 550 AD. The two sites thus offer different timeframes, while also showing that the dating of the burial mounds remains uncertain.

Trip planning and your hotel stay

To plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on museums and archaeology, hiking and cycling, or activities at the harbor. Some options are seasonal: check the Stikk UT! overview for the relevant season and bear in mind that course availability may vary. The ferry from Hundeidvik goes to Standal and continues to Trandal, which is not connected to the road network. Check the service and timetable before you travel. These differences can help you tailor your itinerary to the experiences you want and their specific timing, before looking for a hotel for your stay.
