Culture in the centre of Melbu

Melbo Hovedgård is set in a beautiful park in the centre of Melbu. In the museum garden, you can follow a self-guided trail to discover clues about flora and cultural heritage. Opening times may vary; check them in advance if you plan to make the trail a fixed part of your itinerary. The garden, flora and cultural heritage give the activity a clear connection to nature and culture.

The Norwegian Fishing Industry Museum is now housed in the former production premises of the Neptun Sildoljefabrikk in Melbu, Nordland. The buildings’ former use provides a direct link to the fishing industry. The town thus offers several different cultural points of interest: the trail about flora and cultural heritage in the museum garden, and the museum in former production premises.

Cycling tour starting and ending in Melbu

The cycling tour around Hadseløya starts and ends in Melbu and is 42 km long. It passes through flat, easy-to-cycle terrain. The distance and terrain profile are two separate details to consider when planning: the distance indicates the length of the loop, while the flat profile describes the terrain. The tour also offers glimpses of Hadseløya’s rich wildlife, including eagles. It therefore connects Melbu, the starting and finishing point, with the island’s natural environment.

Hadsel: more culture and nature

In the wider destination of Hadsel, the Neptun Sildoljefabrikk is a technical industrial heritage site on the small island of Svinøya, on the south side of Hadseløya in Vesterålen. It illustrates the industrial fishing economy from the late 19th century through the 20th century; bookable outdoor guided tours are available at the historic site. Another cultural destination in Hadsel is Kulturminneparken: this open-air museum showcases a variety of cultural heritage sites and presents Hadsel’s cultural history. The two places have different focuses: industrial history at the Neptun Sildoljefabrikk and a broader range of cultural heritage sites at Kulturminneparken.

The Møysalen National Park Centre is also in Hadsel: it is a national park centre at Møysalen National Park in Hennes, Hadsel Municipality, Nordland. There are several starting points for hikes to Møysalen, as well as routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. These details can help you compare hiking options by length and difficulty.

In Hadsel, connected cross-country ski trails run between Stokmarknes, Lekangmarka and Melbu. This differs from the single 42 km cycling loop around Hadseløya: the cycling tour starts and ends in Melbu, while the ski trails connect the three places listed. This makes it easy to distinguish between two different types of activity in the destination.

Fiskebøl is also a useful point of reference in Hadsel. The village lies right by the E10 and County Road 888, and about one kilometre from the ferry connection between Fiskebøl and Melbu. If this ferry connection is part of your journey, check the timetable in advance.
