Hadsel combines cultural history and outdoor activities with practical information for getting around. On the small island of Svinøya, you’ll find a technical industrial heritage site; Hennes is home to a national park centre, and there are walking and cycling routes around Hadseløya. Fiskebøl is also a useful reference point for roads and the ferry connection. Plan your trip around your interests, from industrial fishing history to a hike lasting several hours.

Industrial and Cultural History

Neptun Sildoljefabrikk is a technical industrial heritage site on the small island of Svinøya, off the southern side of Hadseløya in Vesterålen. It illustrates industrial fishing from the late 19th to the 20th century. Bookable outdoor tours are offered at the historic site. The focus is on a specific chapter of fishing history spanning several decades.

The Kulturminneparken in Hadsel offers a broader cultural and historical perspective. As an open-air museum, it showcases a variety of cultural heritage sites and presents Hadsel’s cultural history. While Neptun Sildoljefabrikk illustrates industrial fishing during a specific period, the park focuses on a range of heritage sites. This makes it easy to distinguish between a specific industrial theme and a broader look at Hadsel’s cultural heritage.

The Hurtigruten Museum explores another maritime subject: it offers tours of the engine room of the Hurtigruten ship MS Finnmarken, built in 1956. The focus here is on a specific part of a single ship. Since tour arrangements may change, check the current tour options before your trip.

Hiking, Cycling and Cross-Country Skiing

Møysalen Nasjonalparksenter is a national park centre at Møysalen National Park in Hennes, in the municipality of Hadsel in Nordland. There are several starting points and routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels for hikes to Møysalen. You can therefore choose a hike based on two specific factors: distance and difficulty.

The Fjelltur på tvers av Hadseløya hike takes five to six hours and follows a mountain ridge over several peaks. The final climb is to Seterfjellet, which reaches 570 metres above sea level. This hike therefore takes longer than the short walk to Uværshula at Teigan. The coastal shelter sits on a small rise and offers views of the shoreline and sea. From the car park, an easy path of about one kilometre leads there; the walk takes around 20 minutes.

A 42-kilometre cycling route around Hadseløya passes through flat, easy-to-ride terrain. It starts and ends in Melbu, so both the distance and the specific start and end points are known. Connected cross-country ski trails run between Stokmarknes, Lekangmarka and Melbu. Unlike the cycling route, which starts and ends in Melbu, this network of trails stretches between several named places.

Getting to Fiskebøl

Fiskebøl is right by the E10 and Fylkesvei 888, and about one kilometre from the ferry connection between Fiskebøl and Melbu. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable in advance. The road location and distance to the ferry offer practical reference points for your journey.
