Flakstad offers a variety of ways to explore the area: Kvalvika as a popular hiking destination, along with archaeological heritage, church architecture, fishing history and glassblowing. Nature lovers can focus on Kvalvika and the view from Ryten; those interested in culture will find more to explore at Storbåthellaren, Flakstad Church, the Sund Fisherymuseum and Glasshytta på Vikten.

Kvalvika and the landscape

Kvalvika is in the municipality of Flakstad and is part of Lofotodden National Park. Its landscape includes dunes and meadows, mountain vegetation and some rocky terrain. Kvalvika is a popular destination for hikers. The variety of terrain gives the area more than one landscape feature: vegetated areas and rocky ground are part of it, as is the dune landscape.

A special vantage point is Ryten: from the summit, you can look down on Kvalvika’s long golden beach. The beach and the mountain summit offer two different vantage points from which to take in the landscape. If you like to combine your trip with nature and hiking, Kvalvika offers a specific focus that differs from Flakstad’s historical and craft traditions.

Archaeological heritage and Flakstad Church

Storbåthellaren is an automatically protected archaeological site and the oldest known Stone Age settlement site in the Lofoten Islands. This makes it a place whose significance reaches far back into prehistory. Comparing it with Flakstad’s other cultural attractions highlights how far apart the area’s historical points of interest span: from the Stone Age to buildings and collections from later centuries.

The present-day Flakstad Church is in Flakstad, just outside Ramberg, and was completed in 1780. The wooden church has an onion-shaped dome. It is listed by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage and is considered worthy of preservation with national value. Its architectural style, completion date and heritage status offer different perspectives on the building: they provide both a specific point of reference for its architecture and insight into its significance as cultural heritage.

Fishing history and craftsmanship

The Sund Fisherymuseum has boat engines dating from approximately 1901 to 1970, as well as fishing exhibits, boats and household items. The collection therefore brings together technical objects and items related to fishing, boats and household life. The operation of the Sund Fisherymuseum and forge has remained unchanged since its founding by Hans Gjertsen in 1947. For travellers interested in fishing and life around boats, several themes come together in this collection.

Glasshytta på Vikten on the island of Flakstadøya showcases a different kind of craftsmanship. It is the oldest glassblowing workshop in Northern Norway. Visitors can watch the glassblower at work, focusing on the production process itself. This makes the visit different from seeing the collection items in Sund: at Glasshytta, the focus is on glassblowing in action.

Activities and orientation

Lofoten Beach Camp offers surfing lessons for people of all ages. This adds another activity to the mix of hiking, cultural history and craftsmanship. The E10, also known as Kong Olavs vei, runs through the municipality of Flakstad and provides a major road reference for planning your trip.
