Vaksdal: Fjord, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Vaksdal
Vaksdal combines fjord landscapes with cultural sites and hiking destinations. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the locations of your excursions in mind: attractions and places of interest can be found in Vaksdal, Dale, Stamnes and Stanghelle, among other places. This lets you tailor your accommodation search to the themes that interest you most, rather than assuming the same routes and excursions apply throughout the area.
Fjord Landscapes and Trails
The village of Vaksdal lies on the western shore of a fjord, opposite Bruvik on Osterøy. High mountain peaks and a long, deep fjord define the landscape. There are fishing spots and swimming areas along the village’s shore. Another destination for spending time outdoors is Hesjedalsfossen: the waterfall in Vaksdal is 70 metres high, and there is a small rest area by the road.
Near Stanghelle, Fjordsyn is located at Tettaneset. This day-trip cabin in Vaksdal Municipality offers views of Osterøy, the Veafjord and the Sørfjord. A trail leads there from the Agnavika bathing area; it is 1.3 kilometres long and takes about 35 minutes one way. The time estimate is for a single direction.
Cultural Heritage in Vaksdal and Dale
The “Vaksdalsvegar” cultural trail in Vaksdal presents different aspects of the region: information boards cover the landscape and vegetation, as well as transport, livelihoods, agriculture, sports and hydropower. Skipshelleren adds a long history of settlement to this picture. This Stone Age settlement site has been used for more than 7,000 years and is part of the Straume Landscape Museum. A marked trail leads from Dæmring bus station to Skipshelleren.
In Dale, the Dale of Norway Factory Outlet includes a small museum with rare photographs and historic knitting machines. It also shows how the garments have developed since the company’s beginnings in 1879. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit. Near Stamnes, there is also a restored salmon net fishing station 20 metres above the fjord. Visitors can see it on guided tours; confirm tour dates locally.
Hiking and Outdoor Activities
There are several specifically named hiking destinations. T-marked trails lead to Høgabu from Lid, Vaksdal, Dale, Kvitingen and Gullhorgabu. Hananipa is a popular 707-metre-high hiking mountain in Vaksdal; check the conditions before setting out. A trail from Langhelle leads to Raudnipa, and you can extend it to Hananipa.
There are also different options by the water. The Daleelva is managed for salmon fishing; you can walk along the riverbank to DalevĂĄgen. Fishing permits may be required. Ekso Villfisk has developed a managed stretch of the Ekso with a particular focus on fly fishing. Check permit requirements and local operating conditions in advance. In Eksingedalen, Bergo Fjellflyt rents out kayaks, tents and hammocks, and has set up fire pits. Check current availability before your trip.
The Wider Region
Bergsdalen stretches from Dale in Vaksdal to Bulken in Voss, making it a destination for exploring beyond Vaksdal. In Bergsdalen and the Kvammafjella, DNT cabins are connected by good trails; several lakes are suitable for fishing and swimming. At Lid in Bergsdalen, a ski area with groomed trails and a floodlit trail is located by the old school. Check seasonal operations before your arrival. Also on Lid is a church built in 1955 from granite stone from Bergsdalen.
For a taste of regional traditions, there are other places to visit: the Eksingedalsmarknaden takes place every two years in Lavik in Eksingedalen. Find out the date of the next event before your trip. At Bergsdalstunet, visitors can sample local foods made with ingredients from the fjord, rivers, mountain lakes and forest; seasonal availability may vary.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
Dale is accessible by bus, train or car. The train journey from Dale to Bergen takes about 40 to 45 minutes, and to Voss around 35 minutes. As timetables can change, it is a good idea to check the current connections. If you are looking for a hotel in Vaksdal, first choose the destinations that matter to you. This will help you find a location that suits your travel plans without treating the different destinations in the area as if they were all the same.
