Reksteren – Hiking, Landscape and History
Accommodation in Reksteren
Reksteren combines hiking routes with varied landscapes and historic sites, from the coastal fortification at Flygansvær to Hope Cemetery. The Tysnesruta cycling route also takes a detour across the bridge to Reksteren. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish these highlights: the hiking trails offer different points of interest, while each historic site tells a different story.
Hiking and Getting Around
The circular Frøkedalsvatnet rundt trail is 5 km long and starts at the municipal car park by Sør-Reksteren Cemetery. There are hiking options around Skrudalsvatnet for people who prefer trails without steep climbs. The route to Dalstuva passes through pine forest and moorland; the summit lies above the tree line. You can compare these descriptions based on what matters to you: a circular trail and its distance, routes without steep climbs, or the landscape around Dalstuva.
Frøkedalsvatnet itself has a distinctive feature, too: the lake has a large population of small trout that are particularly eager to bite throughout the year. The Tysnesruta cycling route includes a detour across the bridge to Reksteren. So, alongside the hiking options, cycling routes are another distinct focus to consider when planning an outing.
Rocky Peaks, Forests and Moorland
Reksteren is characterised by rocky peaks that drop steeply to the west and slope more gradually to the east. The eastern and southern sides are forested. Together, these differences in direction create a varied landscape: in the west, the terrain is shaped more by steep drops, while the eastern side slopes more gradually and is forested. The route to Dalstuva adds pine forest and moorland to the scenery; at the summit, the trail lies above the tree line. This means you can consider the landscape as a distinct part of your trip planning, rather than treating all hikes as similar outings.
History at Flygansvær, Hope and Kaldafoss
The coastal fortification at Flygansvær preserves remains of a German defensive installation from the Second World War. It was part of the Atlantic Wall, built by Germany during the war; there is an information board at the site. The fortification is therefore a specific place where you can explore the region’s military history.
Hope Cemetery on Reksteren was consecrated in 1890 and used until 1922. Its chapel also serves as a mortuary and the cemetery entrance gate. A memorial stone was erected at Kaldafoss in 2014 to commemorate three British airmen who were shot down in 1941. The three sites each offer a different historical focus: the defensive installation at Flygansvær, the history of the cemetery at Hope, and the commemoration of the airmen at Kaldafoss.
Practical Information for Your Stay
Reksteren is connected to Tysnesøya by a bridge across Bårdsundet. Waterproof footwear is almost essential for hikes away from the main road and the driest forest trails; conditions vary by season. Choose your footwear to suit the trails you plan to walk. Mobile phone coverage on Reksteren can vary considerably. If you rely on maps or information while out and about, it may help to save important details in advance and not rely solely on a stable connection.
Whether you want to focus on a particular hike, the landscape or the historic sites, the options described differ in distance, terrain and subject. Before setting out, check the conditions relevant to your planned hike.
