Vågseidet: Hiking, the post road and water

Vågseidet offers several distinct starting points for your trip. The popular hiking trail to Skausnøya starts here or in Fjellsbø; another hike follows the mountain ridge to Reikerås. There is also the historic route Den Trondhjemske Postvegen. On the water, Vågseidestranda Feriesenter rents boats of various sizes, kayaks and canoes, and offers guest moorings for arriving boats.

Hiking to Skausnøya and Reikerås

The popular trail to Skausnøya starts either in Vågseidet or in Fjellsbø. On the route from Vågseidet, the trail climbs steadily by 350 metres. Skausnøya is close to the destination, in the north of Alver municipality, and is a 363-metre-high viewpoint. From the summit, there are wide-ranging views over the Fensfjord, Gulen, the Masfjord and Nordhordland. One route option descends from Skausnøya through a wooded slope to Vågseidet.

The two elevation figures refer to different things: 350 metres is the steady ascent on the trail from Vågseidet; 363 metres is the height of the viewpoint. Another hike follows the mountain ridge from Vågseidet to Reikerås, passing Skausøyna, Selifjellet and Reikeråsloftet. To choose between them, you can compare two specific details: the elevation gain and viewpoint on the Skausnøya hike, and the named points along the Reikerås route.

The historic post road

The Den Trondhjemske Postvegen route to Vågseidet follows the original post road for much of its length. The road was built in the 19th century. On the section from Trælevikjæ to Vågseidet, you pass three stone bridges; a fourth is at Vågseidet, north of this section. The route thus connects its historic road alignment with specific structures along the way.

Return by bus

The return travel information relates to different routes. For the hike along the mountain ridge, you can park in Vågseidet; taking the bus is one option for the return journey from Reikerås. On the Den Trondhjemske Postvegen route, bus 330 can be used for the return journey from Vågseidet. Check the current bus service for your chosen route separately before making plans.

Boat trips, rentals and guest moorings

Travelling by boat to Vågseidstranda also takes you through the Lindås locks and past Lindås brygge to the innermost part of Vågseide. Vågseidestranda Feriesenter rents boats of various sizes, as well as kayaks and canoes. It also offers guest moorings for arriving boats. Access to showers, toilets, a washing machine and a tumble dryer is included with accommodation. When planning, you can distinguish between renting a watercraft and using a guest mooring for a boat you arrive in.

At the Vågseidestranda bathing area, water quality was rated excellent in a seasonal sample taken on 18 May 2026. This assessment refers to the sampling date and is not a permanent guarantee of water quality.
