Myking – Church Site by the Austfjorden
Accommodation in Myking
Myking lies at the end of Hodnevika on the western shore of the Austfjorden, the innermost part of the Fensfjorden. It has been a church site since 1330. Visitors who want to choose a destination based on architectural history, church history, and historic sites will find several specific points of interest in Myking. Its location by the fjord and the long history of the church site offer two distinct points of reference for planning a trip.
The present-day church: architecture and furnishings
The present-day Myking Church is a stone long church dating from 1861, designed by Christian H. Grosch. This makes it possible to distinguish clearly between the year the church was built and the church site, which has existed since 1330: 1330 is not the date of the present-day building. The term “long church” describes its elongated design. The church also contains a presumably late-medieval oak crucifix. Its dating is explicitly uncertain, so a building from 1861 stands alongside a furnishing that is probably much older.
The present-day organ was built in 1986 by Bruno Christensen & sønner. It has 23 stops distributed across three manuals and a pedal. Stops refer to different tone colors; the manuals and pedal are the playing sections of the instrument.
The older cemetery and its location
An older cemetery lies about 300 meters west-northwest of the present-day Myking Church and cemetery. The site is elongated, almost oval, and surrounded by a stone wall. The older cemetery continued to be used even after the church site was relocated.
Munketrappene and the announced hike
As of the announcement dated September 4, 2025, the old Munketrappene steps in Myking had been restored. An announcement published on September 4, 2025, described a hike up the steps and along the path by Kløvhamrane to the old cemetery. The route was estimated to take about 1 hour and 15 minutes at a relaxed pace. For this announced hike, the meeting point was at the steps; it was a 10- to 15-minute walk from the sports ground in Myking, where parking was available. If you are planning to take the route today, check the local information beforehand.
The church as a cultural venue
Myking Church is one of the churches in the Lindås Sokn that can be rented in Alver for concerts and other cultural events. If you are considering the church for a particular concert or event, confirm the specific arrangements beforehand. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Myking, the different points of interest can help structure your trip planning: church architecture and the organ, the history of the old cemetery, or the hike described in the announcement.
