Utåker combines the history of the old Holmedal churchyard with the hike to Ulvanosa. When choosing where to stay, you can consider a range of interests: protected areas, church history, and a mountain hike with several route options. The specific location and trail details help put these themes in context; with changing trail conditions, it is worth checking the latest tour information.

Landscape and protected areas in Utåker

Holmedalsberget Nature Reserve is in Utåker. It was established on 23 November 1984 and covers 2,363 dekar. Tveitabotn Nature Reserve, also in Utåker, is smaller: it covers 468 dekar and was established on 13 October 2000. The comparison in size provides a concrete reference point for the two protected areas without equating their landscapes. If you need precise protected-area boundaries, check the current official map.

Another notable place is the old Holmedal churchyard. It is located in Kyrkjedalen in Holmedal, on Utåker, and offers panoramic views over the Skånevik Fjord. The fjord view connects your visit with the landscape; the churchyard’s location is also closely linked to the history of the church site.

Church history between Holmedal and Utåker

The first known stave church in Holmedal is mentioned in a land register from the 14th century. The church site was later moved: after the majority of parishioners decided to relocate it from Holmedal to Utåker, a new Holmedal Church was built there in 1881–1882. The plans were drawn up by Lensmann F. Øvrevik in Skånevik. The early mention of the stave church in Holmedal and the construction of the new church in Utåker thus represent two distinct chapters in the history of the same place.

The old church path is also part of this cultural context. During the “Gamaldags kyrkjesundag” at the old Holmedal churchyard, participants in the event’s sixth year walked from the landing at Holmedalstranda along the old church path to the churchyard. If you would like to attend the event, check the current dates before travelling.

Hike to Ulvanosa: Stages and Route Choices

The hike to Ulvanosa starts and ends at Ternebu in the Tveitedalen ski centre. First, a 1.2-kilometre lit path follows Bakkastølsvatnet. The route then follows the river to an inner bridge. This clearly describes the first section, before two options become available farther up: at around 800 metres above sea level, you can choose the direct route to the summit or follow the T-marked route around Øktaredalsnuten. This route offers views of the Matersfjorden.

From the summit, the view extends over the mountains of Etne and Kvinnherad, to Folgefonna and the Hardangerfjord, and towards the mountain landscape near Bergen. Visibility depends on the weather. There is an information board in the car park; after the forest road or lit ski trail, the route is T-marked and signposted. Markings and terrain can change, so check the current trail conditions before setting out.

You can take a break at the restored Dyrrindo cabin, which is open to everyone. If you plan to stop there, check its local status before your visit. To reach the trailhead, take the turn-off for Holmedal from the main road, before the ferry landing at Utåker. At a later junction, a road branches off 2.5 kilometres north to the ski centre. Check current navigation information for the drive.

More activities and seasons

In spring, people ski from Tveitedalen to Ulvanosa. This offers another way to make the same mountain the focus of a trip; snow and safety conditions vary. Take current conditions into account before setting out. Nearby Utåker, on the steep mountain slopes towards Uskedalen, also has climbing areas with routes of all difficulty levels on solid granite. Check access and conditions locally.

Cultural destinations in the wider Kvinnherad destination

The wider Kvinnherad destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. Baroniet Rosendal is Norway’s only barony and Scandinavia’s smallest castle. The estate includes a castle dating from 1665 and a garden with 300 years of garden history.

Halsnøy Kloster is also part of the cultural offering in Kvinnherad. The history of this historic site dates back to 1163; guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, and concerts are held there throughout the year. In Rosendal, Steinparken features a collection of different rock types from the region, as well as exhibitions on prehistoric themes. These include stories about life on Earth, climate change, and fossils. These destinations add further cultural and visitor attractions to the wider Kvinnherad area without attributing them to Utåker.
