In Uskedalen, river and mountain landscapes sit alongside a layered local history. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you are most interested in waterways and trails, climbing routes, or places of cultural and historical interest. Local highlights range from the Uskedalselva and Fagerdalen to farm buildings, an old school, and memorials from different periods of war. Nature and culture offer distinct focal points for planning your visit.

Landscapes, Trails, and Climbing

The BÞrsdalen trail follows the BÞrsdalselva through a valley flanked by Englafjell and UlvanÄso. The Uskedalselva is a different waterway, alternating between rapids and gently flowing stretches. A road runs its entire length, making it easier to access fishing opportunities and enjoy the outdoors. Fagerdalen is home to Lake Fagerdalsvatnet and the stone remains of old mountain farms, or summer farms. These offer distinct interests: the character of the river, the valley trail, the lake, and traces of former summer farms.

For the Englafjell route, a large car park with an information board about Uskedalen is available at Gamleskulen in the village centre. The Uskedalen–UlvanĂ„so climbing area has around 60 naturally protected routes. They range from 1 to 18 pitches in length and from grade 4− to 7+. The number of pitches indicates the length of a route, while the grades indicate its difficulty. Check the current climbing guide for route details and take local conditions into account.

Local History and Buildings

Bygdetunet Rþd in Uskedalen includes a cooper’s workshop by the sea, as well as a farmhouse, a storehouse, a smithy, and an 18th-century mill. The buildings illustrate life on a farm in Kvinnherad in the past century. Together with the Dþnhaugsamlinga, the collection comprises more than 450 objects. The different buildings provide insight into various aspects of farm life, while the combined collection adds to this picture with its collection of objects.

KapteinsgĂ„rden is a protected officers’ residence dating from the 18th century, built in the mountain Empire style. The house is privately owned. The old Haugland School is a school museum for Kvinnherad. It was built in 1893 and served as the school for the Haugland and Musland school districts until 1966. Its former function as a school thus differs from the portrayal of farm life at Bygdetunet RĂžd.

Uskedal Church was built in 1914 to plans by cathedral architect Olaf Nordhagen. Riksantikvaren lists it as a cultural heritage site, but it is not protected. The standing stone beside Uskedalen’s permanent Christmas tree was also erected in 1914. It commemorates those called up during the war of 1807 to 1814 and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Norway. A revolver cannon at Myklebust quay commemorates the events of the 1940 war, in which it was used. The two memorials therefore relate to clearly distinct periods: the war of 1807 to 1814 and the events of 1940.
