Discover Mosterhamn
Accommodation in Mosterhamn
Mosterhamn brings together local history, Norwegian church history and a historic walking trail. Three themes give your trip planning a clear direction: the Moster Museum collection, the historical interpretation at Moster Amfi and the Kulturløypa, which begins in Mosterhamn and leads to Moster gamle kyrkje and Moster Amfi. Exhibitions and historical themes thus meet a route whose scenery shifts between open ground by the fjord and dense deciduous forest.
Museum and Church History
The Moster Museum has a unique collection of objects relating to Moster's local history. Images and equipment from seafaring and fishing sit alongside displays of a home, a classroom and a shoemaker's workshop. The collection brings maritime themes together with the area's ways of life and work. The museum is run by Moster sogelag.
Norwegian national church history is at the heart of Moster Amfi. Its interpretation covers two events that originated in Moster: the Christianisation of Norway in 995 and the Christian law introduced at the Mostrating in 1024. The setting also shapes the visit: the centre is idyllically situated in a disused marble quarry. Moster Amfi is also stop number 6 on the Kystpilegrimsleia coastal pilgrimage route. You can have your pilgrim passport stamped there. Pilgrim passports can be purchased at the Kaupang. Moster Amfi also offers guided tours of Moster gamle kyrkje. Check the current tour schedule before your trip.
When choosing a theme, it is helpful to consider the difference in scope: the museum focuses on Moster's local history and various aspects of life, while Moster Amfi places the events rooted in Moster within the context of Norway's national church history.
The Kulturløypa and its scenery
The Kulturløypa is a historic walking trail that begins in Mosterhamn and leads to Moster gamle kyrkje and Moster Amfi. Along sections of the old postal road, it follows the Bømlafjord and continues via Marmorvegen to Notland. Along the way, open ground with views of the fjord alternates with dense deciduous forest; the route also passes the region's best-preserved lime kiln. There is ample parking at Moster gamle kyrkje, including space for buses. Facilities for boat tourists are available at Moster gruvepark. Check the latest practical information before setting off.
