Bømlo is a coastal archipelago with more than 1,000 islands. The scenery shifts between wind-swept coastal cliffs and lush, deep forests; geographically, it stretches from Langevåg and the car-free island of Espevær in the south to Slåtterøy in the north. For your trip, you can focus on mountain and hiking experiences, cultural history, or excursions on the water.

Siggjo and trails through the landscape

At 474 metres, Siggjo is Bømlo’s highest mountain. From there, the view extends from Folgefonna in the east to Haugesund in the south. The ascent follows Laksatrappo, with around 1,010 steps built by Sherpas and several rest stops. You can also explore Bømlo on foot through other types of terrain: hiking trails lead through coastal rocks, heathland and inland forests. Alongside the summit route, there are trails through a variety of landscapes to choose from.

Kulleseidkanalen and history at Moster

Kulleseidkanalen was completed in 1856 to make boat journeys between the eastern and western sides of Bømlo easier. You can travel through it by boat or kayak. Kulleseidkanalen guest harbour, with 40 berths, is located by the canal. Visitors arriving by kayak, bicycle, on foot or by car are welcome. Check the current availability of the harbour facilities before your trip. The restaurant serves traditional cuisine and light meals; confirm in advance that it is currently operating.

There is also an official 18-hole disc golf course at Kulleseidkanalen, spread over an area of about 90 decares. The small Kanaldagane festival is held at the canal every year. If you plan to attend, check the programme for your travel dates.

Moster Amfi presents the history of the introduction of Christian law in Norway and includes a visit to Moster gamle kyrkje. Historical experiences and guided tours are also available; confirm the availability of guided tours before your trip. The Steinriket Bømlo exhibition complements the visit with geology and mining history. A mine tunnel offers insights into Bømlo’s geology and mining history, from the Stone Age to modern times.

Espevær and activities on the water

Espevær is home to Baadehuset, an original trading house from the 1850s. Period furnishings and a video presentation provide historical context. Baadehuset can be reached by cable ferry from Garvika across the Norda Sundet. The Espevær cable ferry crosses a 45-metre-wide stretch of water in about two minutes and carries up to four people. Check its operating status and capacity before travelling.

Langevåg Bygdatun arranges tailor-made trips, as well as fishing or sightseeing tours aboard the fishing boat M/S Gå, by advance booking. Brandasund Kultur & Fritid offers RIB trips. At Gullvegen Gardstun, in the historic Lykling gold-mining area, activities include gold panning, along with other experiences tailored to different age groups and focused on history, coastal landscapes, animals and farm life. Confirm which visitor activities are available before your trip.

When planning your hotel stay, you can start by choosing what you want to focus on: Siggjo and the hiking trails offer different experiences from Moster Amfi, Steinriket Bømlo or Baadehuset. If you also plan to attend Kanaldagane, check the programme for your dates; the relevant confirmation and booking instructions apply to guided tours, trips aboard M/S Gå and ferry services.
