Nybergsund: History and River Experiences
Accommodation in Nybergsund
Nybergsund combines a distinctive historical focus with swimming and river experiences. In Kongeparken, a memorial stele commemorates the bombing of the village in 1940; the park is also home to four works of art by Vebjørn Sand. Tjønna is a swimming spot, and a canoe trip on the Trysilelva ends there. The wider Trysil area offers a broader range of seasonal activities.
Kongeparken and Local History
At the historic site of Kongeparken, King Haakon hid from German air raids on 11 April 1940. A memorial stele commemorates the bombing of Nybergsund that same year. The park is also home to four works of art by Vebjørn Sand. You can explore Kongeparken on foot at your own pace; on a walk of your own, you can see the stele and artworks in a single visit to the park. In the wider Trysil destination, Kongeparken is the municipality’s millennium site. It also conveys Trysil’s wartime history, which is connected to the dramatic events and the bombing of Nybergsund during the Second World War.
The buildings Karlslund and Heggelund are in and near Nybergsund. Karlslund, also known as Kongsgården, was an old post station and operated as a hotel in 1940.
Swimming and Canoeing
Tjønna is a popular swimming spot in Nybergsund. It is also the endpoint of an approximately four-kilometre canoe trip on the Trysilelva, which runs between Trysil Hyttegrend and Tjønna. The river flows steadily and calmly, so little paddling is needed; trout and grayling live in its clear water. The approximate distance indicates the length of the route, while the gentle current shapes the paddling experience.
Swimming Spots and Location
Tjønna lies north of Nybergsund on Road 26. Another swimming spot is Gjetsjøen, between Nybergsund and Østby; its swimming area is clearly visible from Road 25, about twelve kilometres east of Nybergsund. The locations are distinct: Tjønna is to the north, while Gjetsjøen is to the east, towards Østby.
Trysil as a Wider Destination
The wider Trysil destination has four interconnected ski areas; SkiStar Trysil has 71 groomed runs and 41 modern lifts. Trysil offers a total of 500 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails, many of which are also suitable for skating. There are short and long loop trails at Trysilfjellet. In addition, more than 70 kilometres of adapted mountain biking trails wind through forest and mountain landscapes in Trysil. Seasonal family rafting is also offered there on the southern section of the Trysilelva, in calmer water with difficulty grades 1–2. Ski operations, trail grooming and family rafting are seasonal; the mountain biking trail network may change. Check the latest information on operations, grooming and routes before travelling.
The difference between the river experiences is clear: the canoe trip ends at Tjønna in Nybergsund, while seasonal family rafting takes place on the southern section of the river in the wider Trysil area.
