The municipality of Grue is part of Finnskogen and borders Sweden. Its Skogfinn heritage is reflected in historic farms, forest buildings, and recurring cultural events. The trails also combine specific distance information with traces of earlier work. This means that building and settlement history, an event in July, and hikes with clearly named destinations offer different themes to choose from during a stay in Grue.

Skogfinn architecture and settlement history

Finnetunet is located in Grue Finnskog. Its 13 buildings show what a Finnish-influenced forest farm might have looked like in the past. Three types of Finnish-influenced forest buildings with smoke ovens can be seen there: a smokehouse, a smoke sauna, and a rie. The ensemble thus takes you from a possible overall picture of a farm to specific building types and their shared features.

Hytjanstorpet offers a different perspective. This relatively well-preserved Skogfinn torp comprises eight typical buildings and is still used traditionally. At the same time, it is an important example of the development of Skogfinn settlement across large parts of Finnskogen. Such settlements arose in areas where summer farming was practiced. While Finnetunet conveys a possible picture of an earlier forest farm, Hytjanstorpet combines a preserved torp with regional settlement history and continued traditional use.

Another historical landmark is the Gruetunet Museum, founded in 1942 and located one kilometre east of Kirkenær. Its founding date and location give it a distinct place alongside the Skogfinn farms and buildings.

Finnskogdagene in July

Finnskogdagene has been held in July in Svullrya, in Grue Finnskog, since 1970. The open-air theatre performance “Spillet om innvandrerne” is associated with Finnskogdagene. This recurring event and the Skogfinn buildings offer different ways to explore the region’s cultural history: one is a date on the events calendar, the other its building and settlement forms.

If you want to plan your trip around Finnskogdagene, check the dates for the relevant year. July is the stated event month; the specific dates will help you plan your stay accordingly.

Hiking trails and traces of earlier work

The marked Tjurastien is about 4 km each way. It starts at Gardsjøen Nature Reserve and ends at Tørmoen, at Tjura Skytterhus. Signs along the trail provide information about former mills, sawmills, and power plants that once provided work for many people. The trail thus combines wayfinding with the history of former workplaces.

Several ruins of former industrial sites can be seen along the Tjuraåa. These traces provide a distinct local connection to industrial history.

The 10-torpsrunden is a different kind of route: the loop is about 12 km long, and around four hours of walking time without breaks is recommended. It passes ten torps as well as the remains of two summer farm buildings. When comparing it with Tjurastien, the distance information is important: for the latter, the length is given one way; the former is a loop with an approximate walking time. The route also combines its length with several named historical stops.

Grusetsetra is a small cabin with an associated shelter on the Finnskogleden in Grue municipal forest. The Finnskogleden as a whole is divided into 13 stages and normally takes 14 days. Thus, alongside individual trails and loops, the stages and usual duration of a longer route are also available as a guide.

For your trip planning, the facts offer different fixed points: July for Finnskogdagene, the specific length of Tjurastien, or the loop distance and recommended walking time for the 10-torpsrunden. Those primarily interested in Skogfinn culture will find different historical perspectives at Finnetunet and Hytjanstorpet. These distinctions can help you decide what to focus on during your stay in Grue.
