Ask lies at the northwestern end of Tyrifjord, at the mouth of the Sogna, also called Sokna. The destination offers a range of interests, including routes through woodland and open countryside, a snow-dependent cross-country ski trail, and the history of the settlement. When looking for a hotel for your trip to Ask, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Walking routes and winter in Ask

Ask Utvikling is responsible for the white-marked routes through woodland and open countryside around Ask. The network of routes was officially opened in 2021. The map board by the school and the board at 274-metre-high Aklangen describe the network. These provide two named reference points for planning your routes.

When there is snow, Stranden IL prepares a classic-track cross-country ski trail from the access road by Aklangen in Ask towards Lerbergsetra. Snow conditions determine whether the trail is available. This lets you distinguish between the routes through woodland and open countryside and an explicitly seasonal winter option. The trail is further described by its classic track and its direction towards Lerbergsetra.

Waterfront location and local history

Hengslestranda is a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Ask, at the mouth of the Sogna. A notice from November 2023 described Hengslestranda as a newly established bathing attraction. Its opening had been postponed until spring at the time because of flooding. Check current access before visiting.

The settlement’s origins are also connected to an earlier transport link: Ask grew up around the now-disused Ask station on the Randsfjord Line. Ask Chapel is located northeast of the settlement of Ask, in Norderhov, within the parish of Ask. It was built in 1936 and designed by architect L. W. Wilhelmsen. The year it was built and the architect’s name give travellers interested in architectural history two specific points of reference.

Ringerike: museums and cultural history

In the wider destination of Ringerike, Ringerikes Museum is located in the old Norderhov vicarage next to Norderhov Church. Its exhibitions include several hundred objects from Jørgen Moe’s private household. The museum also houses an exhibition by Hjemmestyrkemuseet, with equipment and weapons from both sides during the occupation years. The private household collection and the exhibition on the occupation period offer distinct thematic focuses.

Also in the wider destination of Ringerike, Kjerratmuseet is a cultural and natural history museum for Ă…sa. It includes a chainsaw museum and a 13-metre-long terrain model showing the historic Kjerrat installations, old farms and mountain pastures. Kjerratstien is distinct from the museum: it mostly follows the former timber transport route and has several information boards. Together, these offer different ways to explore history: a model in the museum and a route along the former timber transport route.
