Kongsberg combines mining history, historic architecture, music and seasonal experiences.

Getting There and When to Visit

Kongsberg station is on the Sørlandsbanen. From there, trains run to destinations including Stavanger, Kristiansand, Arendal, Drammen, Oslo S, Oslo Airport and Eidsvoll. Local trains run hourly in Kongsberg; regional trains to Oslo and Stavanger run eight times a day. As timetables and connections may change, check the latest departures before planning your trip.

The events calendar also provides a useful reference: the Kongsberg Jazz Festival has been held annually since 1964, with the exception of the exceptional year 2020. It lasts four days and takes place in calendar week 27. Concerts are spread across around 15 venues in the town; the number and distribution may vary from year to year. So check the dates and programme for the year of your trip.

Mining History and Historic Sites

The Norsk Bergverksmuseum presents the history of mining in Kongsberg over a period of 335 years. Its permanent exhibitions are housed in the former smelting works of the Kongsberg Silver Mines in the town centre. The museum also holds the world's largest collection of native wire silver. Important for planning your visit: the museum has been temporarily closed since 3 August 2026 for refurbishment; a new main exhibition is planned for June 2027.

A mine train takes visitors through the Christian VII adit for 2,300 metres to Kongens gruve, the largest mine in the silver works. During the season, demonstrations of fire-setting are held daily at Aktivitetsplassen by the Sølvgruvene. This demonstrates a historic method of breaking rock. The two experiences bring different aspects of mining to life: the journey through the adit and an earlier mining technique.

A prominent landmark is Kongsberg kirke, Norway's largest Baroque church. Its richly decorated Rococo interior features glass chandeliers, ceiling paintings and the Gloger organ. It is considered Scandinavia's largest historic Baroque organ, with 42 stops and between 2,000 and 3,000 pipes. Tours of the church can be booked by phone. Check the contact information before your trip. In HĂĄvet, a group of royal monograms commemorates another historic connection: the tradition of carving them into the rock face began with King Frederick IV's visit in June 1704.

Museums, Culture and Outdoor Activities

The Lågdalsmuseet in Kongsberg comprises 32 listed historic buildings. On the grounds of the former Glitre estate stands an Empire-style building erected in 1812, with representative interiors from different periods; the estate was home to several mining officials from Kongsberg. The museum also includes Norway's only specialist museum of optics and a museum about the Norwegian resistance movement. Families may also enjoy the playground and seasonal wildlife viewing: in summer, Telemark cattle, Døle horses, goats with kids and sheep with lambs graze in the meadows.

Those looking to spend time outdoors can take the hiking lift at Skimore Kongsberg, which provides access to forests and hiking opportunities. Its availability may vary by season; check its operating status before planning your visit. Formula G at Skimore is a gravity-powered track: the motorless vehicles travel along a paved course with banked turns. The park Kvarten, which is for recreation, is part of the Norsk Bergverksmuseum.

Near Kongsberg, the Labromuseene add to the cultural offerings. They include the Norsk Vassdragsmuseum, the Numedalslågens Fløtningsmuseum and the Norsk Vegmuseum Labro. At the Labromuseene, you can see art exhibitions at Galleri Labro. Mobråten galleri og skulpturpark combines an art gallery with a sculpture park on a former smallholding. Near Hvittingfoss are rock carvings more than 3,000 years old; access is via the Brobakken farm. Find out about access arrangements before your visit.
