Hvittingfoss offers several starting points for planning your trip: church architecture, Hvittingfossmarken and the Numedalslågen. You can decide which to focus on depending on whether you are more interested in architecture, a local tradition or the river. Find more cultural topics in the wider destination of Kongsberg.

Tuft Church and Church History

Tuft Church is a brick long church, built in 1880, with seating for 150. Its Neo-Gothic style adds an architectural classification: “long church” refers to the building type, while the Neo-Gothic style draws on the forms of Gothic architecture. The building type, material and style are therefore distinct features of the same building. A copy of Thorvaldsen’s Christus statue was used as the altarpiece at Tuft Church.

The history of the church in Tuft also includes an older building: a stave church stood at Tuftmoen for around 600 years and was demolished in 1880. Its history therefore goes back much further than the brick church built in 1880. Comparing the dates helps distinguish the former stave church from Tuft Church as two separate buildings.

Hvittingfossmarken and the Numedalslågen

Hvittingfossmarken has been a tradition for more than three decades and is an important meeting place in Hvittingfoss. The 33rd edition featured a weekend of music, activities, market stalls and entertainment for children and adults. If the festival is important to your trip, check the dates and program for the relevant edition.

Two different descriptions of the fishing stretch along the Numedalslågen should be distinguished. The managed area follows the main river channel north from its mouth in Larvik to the dam in Hvittingfoss. The fishing stretch from Holmfoss upstream to Hvittingfoss is also designated as a separate section. The first description refers to the extent of the managed main channel, while the second describes the status of a named section. Further afield in the region, in the lower Numedalslågen, historical fishing methods are still used, including the so-called log-driving fishery.
