Svene by the Numedalslågen
Accommodation in Svene
Svene by the river and along the roads
Svene lies 20 kilometers north of Kongsberg on the eastern bank of the Numedalslågen; the river flows through the village. Nearby, Grettefossen is located in the river at Svene. The riverside setting and the road network are two distinct points of reference for the destination: the Numedalslågen runs through Svene, while several roads pass through the village or lead from here toward Kongsberg.
Fylkesvei 40 runs through Svene. From here, Fylkesvei 2780 runs via Lurdalen to Kongsberg; there is also a turnoff from Svene onto Fylkesvei 2774 in the direction of Kongsberg. The road descriptions therefore differ: Fylkesvei 40 passes through the village, while the other two describe routes from Svene. Road conditions and traffic can change. It is therefore a good idea to check the current situation before setting off.
Cycling between Svene and Lampeland
A combined pedestrian and cycling path between Lampeland and Svene allows for five kilometers of safe cycling. For National Cycle Route 5, a signposted detour via Lampeland that uses this path is recommended. The five kilometers refer to the pedestrian and cycling path; the detour describes the route taken by National Cycle Route 5.
The association last rode the route in 2020/21; conditions can change. So check the current situation before your trip, especially if you plan to use the signposted detour.
Church and architectural history
Svene Church is mentioned as early as 1434. The wooden church replaced an earlier stave church on this site and was converted into a cruciform church in 1738. The two dates mark different stages: 1434 is the earliest mention, while 1738 is the later conversion.
Wrought-iron parts from the former stave church were incorporated into the western door of the new Svene Church. Employees of the silver works donated the organ, which was installed in 1797. The cemetery also has a distinctive architectural feature: it is enclosed by large stone slabs set upright. In this way, details of the predecessor building, the church’s furnishings and the cemetery enclosure sit side by side.
Immediately south of Svene is the Fjøse farm, with a medieval storehouse. Gothic clustered columns stand beside its entrance. The storehouse is therefore another architectural point of reference in the area around Svene.
