When planning your trip to Bygland, you can focus on local history, steamship journeys or cultural heritage. The Bygland Museum is a specific point of reference: several named venues and a bathing beach are located right nearby. The Viking exhibition and Bygland Church add archaeological finds and architectural history to the cultural theme.

The Bygland Museum and its surroundings

Right next to the Bygland Museum are the Bjoren Brygge café and pub, and Stoga, a cultural café with tourist information. Their stated functions differ: Stoga combines a cultural café with tourist information, while Bjoren Brygge is a café and pub. A bathing beach and an outdoor recreation area are also right next to the museum. There is an electric vehicle charging station there too; check its current availability before making it a firm part of your plans.

Trips on the Bjoren and the summer event

Trips on the «Bjoren» steamship start at the quay in Bygland and return to the same quay. A trip takes about two hours. For open trips, arrangements may change depending on the water level; timetables and available trips may vary. The approximate duration helps you plan how much time to allow. Check specific departure dates in advance.

Every summer, the Bygland Museum hosts the NM i Paragliding Akro. Specific dates may vary. If you want to plan your stay around the event, check the event dates before travelling.

Viking exhibition and church architecture

The Viking exhibition is located in the library and cultural heritage centre in the Sentrumsbygget in Bygland. It displays finds from Viking graves in Neset and Frøysnes, including original swords, pieces of jewellery and spindle whorls. These different artefacts make the exhibition a specific point of interest for anyone interested in archaeological finds. Check the exhibition details before your visit.

Bygland Church was built in 1838 using log construction and has a cruciform floor plan. Log construction uses stacked logs to form the walls; the cruciform floor plan describes the shape of the building when viewed from above. This distinguishes the church’s construction method from its floor plan.

Culture in the wider Bygland destination

In the wider Bygland destination, Landeskogen Kunstsanatorium is developing a former sanatorium from the early 20th century into an arts centre with an art museum, gallery and workshop. Its former use and its development into an arts centre are different aspects of its history; the exhibition programme may change. Also in the wider Bygland destination is Ose, with Storstoga, a rare meeting house built from large timber beams. The wood was felled in the winter of 1655/56. Compared with Bygland Church, the historical details of the buildings focus on different aspects: the church’s log construction and floor plan, and Storstoga’s beams and their precisely stated felling period.

In the wider Bygland destination, the Byglandsfjord station building houses a library, an exhibition and a summer café. The café operates seasonally; check current opening hours if you are planning a visit. The station grounds are protected by the Riksantikvaren as a cultural heritage site of national importance. Here, cultural use and the protection of the grounds as a heritage site come together.

Landscape and hiking trails in the wider Bygland destination

In the wider Bygland destination, the Setesdal Vesthei–Ryfylkeheiane Landscape Protection Area covers an area of 2,385 km². The municipal trails plan lists Fånefjell as an existing hiking trail on the south side of Vesle Fånefjell. Utsikten is another existing hiking trail, leading from Årdal Church to Utsikten. The two trail descriptions offer different points of reference: one gives the location on the mountain, while the other gives the start and end points.

An existing DNT hiking trail leads from Langeid via Tjønndalen, Gaukhei and Josephsbu towards Kvinen in Sirdal. Tjønndalen is also a DNT-operated tourist cabin in the wider Bygland destination; its facilities may change. Trail conditions and access may vary seasonally.
