Bygland: Hiking, boat trips and culture

Bygland can be explored for trip planning through several specific points of interest: boat trips and the museum, hiking trails, and cultural sites such as Byglandsfjord and Ose. Museum, steamship and lakeside locations

The Bygland Museum is the starting point for trips on the Bjoren steamship. The wood-fired vessel dates from 1866 and offers a round trip of about 2.5 hours during the summer season. Trips on the Bjoren can start in Bygland or Byglandsfjord. As the schedule and sailing dates are seasonal and may change, it is a good idea to check the current times before your trip.

The museum itself also offers several things to see and do during a visit: visitors can experience an Årestoge dating from 1650 and see a small exhibition in Nyestog. The museum also has its own sandy beach and a steamship pier. Near the administrative centre of Bygland, Presteneset also has a sandy beach and a pier. When comparing the two locations, an additional point of interest is therefore useful: the museum offers historical exhibits and a connection to the Bjoren, while Presteneset is close to the administrative centre.

Hiking trails and protected landscape

The Setesdal Vesthei–Ryfylkeheiane Landscape Conservation Area includes land in Bygland; its total area is 2,385 km². Several different routes are named for hiking. The Fånefjell hiking trail runs along the southern side of Vesle Fånefjell. Utsikten leads from Årdal Church to Utsikten. Their respective landmarks help you distinguish between the routes by their course. Conditions on site may change.

Another established DNT hiking trail leads from Langeid via Tjønndalen, Gaukhei and Josephsbu towards Kvinen in Sirdal. Tjønndalen is a DNT-operated tourist cabin in Bygland. Trail conditions and access on this route may change seasonally; take this into account when planning.

The hiking routes differ in their named starting and ending points and in the stops along the way. Fånefjell and Utsikten can be considered in relation to their respective landmarks; the route via Tjønndalen, Gaukhei and Josephsbu, by contrast, describes a longer route towards Sirdal. This lets you first decide whether to include one of the locally named trails or the multi-stage route in your plans.

Cultural history in Byglandsfjord and Ose

The Byglandsfjord station building houses a library, an exhibition and a summer café; the café operates seasonally. The station grounds are protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren) as a cultural heritage site of national value. The library, exhibition and café serve different purposes within an area whose protected cultural status is also a distinct point of interest for trip planning.

Ose has a rare architectural and cultural environment. This includes Storstoga, a rare assembly house built from large timber beams. The wood for the building was felled in the winter of 1655/56. This specific date and the building method give the house’s architectural history a particularly tangible link to a point in time.

Tjovhola also tells a story of the historical use of the landscape: the cave was altered in historical times through the mining of the mineral fluorite. This mining was connected to the old copper works in Åraksbø. On a different scale, Landeskogen Art Sanatorium is transforming a former sanatorium from the early 20th century into an art centre with an art museum, gallery and workshop. The exhibition programme may change.

In summer, the Bygland Museum hosts the Norwegian Acro Paragliding Championship, NM i Paragliding Akro. Gamaveka Extreme also takes place in Bygland every year in calendar week 30. Specific event dates may change; check the dates if you want to plan your trip around an event.
