Åmli between Trogfjell, cycling and culture

There are two Via Ferrata routes on Trogfjell, with views of Åmli centre and the surrounding landscape. The Trogbu day-hiking cabin is located on Trogfjell, close to the centre. From there, the view stretches across the Nidelva and a cultural landscape shaped by active farming and forestry.

Trogfjell: Via Ferrata routes and cultural trail

The older of the two Via Ferrata routes is 240 metres long, with an elevation difference of about 200 metres. The route starts are signposted at the car park by the Elvarheim Museum and along the path to Trogfjell. From the car park, it is an easy walk of about 15 minutes to the starts. Before your visit, check the municipality’s current access information, as local conditions may change.

You can also combine a walk up the mountain with cultural and nature themes: the Trogfjell hiking and cultural trail runs from the Elvarheim Museum to the summit. Along the way, 13 stops provide information about nature and culture in Åmli. The view from the day-hiking cabin and the trail with its stops offer different perspectives on the surrounding area.

Cycling between Åmli and Treungen

The Åmli–Treungen cycling route follows the historic railway line between the two places. It is 34.9 kilometres each way and has only gentle gradients. For most of its length, it runs along a dedicated route separated from car traffic. Along the way, it passes cultural heritage sites related to railway operations and timber floating on the Nidelva. The route therefore combines cycling with insights into the history of the railway and timber floating.

Museum and historic trails

The Elvarheim Museum is housed in the former municipal building, built in 1925, on the Nidelva in the centre of Åmli. The core collection includes the collection of trapper Aslak Harstveit, with stuffed animals, trapping equipment and more than 200 knives. The exhibition “Det vesle folket” shows the life of beavers above and below the water. The second floor also features a violin-maker’s workshop, which opens by request. Advance arrangements may be necessary.

Åmli bygdetun preserves and shares the history of the smallholding at Grånheia in the centre of Åmli. In the village, the Sentrumsløypa leads to ten historic sites marked with information boards. It also serves as a starting point for the local Stolpejakt activity. Rostveitplassen is one of the marked cultural heritage trails in Åmli, with information boards at the heritage sites. The Hillestad Gallery adds an artistic dimension to these themes: it presents exhibitions and offers art and handicrafts to view and buy.

Swimming, timber floating and local produce

The bathing park in the centre of Åmli has a bathing area, a beach volleyball court, tennis courts and water-play equipment. As facilities may operate seasonally, check current availability before visiting. Timber floating is the focus at Vannvegen at Pan Garden: the miniature river lets children float timber as it was once done in Åmli. Visitor arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check in advance.
