The Glomma and Vorma rivers meet in Nes. Their confluence is a distinctive feature of the area. River and marsh landscapes, historic sites and a variety of activities offer different ways to shape your travel plans. If you’re looking for a hotel in Nes, consider which aspects of the destination matter most for your stay.

Rivers, ravines and marshes

Below the marine limit, Nes has ravine landscapes shaped by clay deposits and cut through by the Glomma and Vorma rivers. Nes also has significant areas of intact fens and raised bogs. Its natural features range from clay-shaped landforms to two distinct types of marsh. In Fenstad, along the Vormadalen valley, there is a landscape area designated as a KULA landscape of national cultural and historical interest. This designation adds a cultural and historical perspective to the landscape of Nes.

Church ruins and working life

The ruins of Nes Church lie on the headland where the Glomma and Vorma rivers meet. Hydropower has been used at Funnefoss for several centuries. Uses there included a mill and a sawmill; from 1875, there was also a wood-processing factory. The Funnefoss Industrial Workers Museum comprises three houses with living environments from 1910 to 1950. Taken together, these sites and stories span the long-term use of hydropower and the 20th-century living environments on display.

Auli Mill, built in 1909, and Gamle Hvam, a historic large farm, offer further historical points of interest. The buildings at Gamle Hvam remain in their original location. Different aspects of history are represented here: a mill and industrial use, historic living environments, and a large farm with buildings in their original setting.

Waterways and routes

Nes’s extensive network of waterways offers opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. There are also opportunities for both activities on the lakes around Årnes, in the direction of the Halden watercourse. This identifies both Nes’s waterways in general and a specific area of lakes near Årnes as options for these water activities. The Svanfoss lock allows passage between Lake Mjøsa and the Glomma.

For hiking, Oldtidsveien is a trail in the Funnefoss area that runs via Herbergåsen and Oppakermoen. The Vorma Route from Eidsvoll is another route to consider: it passes through agricultural areas and crosses the municipal boundary into Nes. While Oldtidsveien runs via Funnefoss, Herbergåsen and Oppakermoen, the Vorma Route from Eidsvoll passes through agricultural areas and crosses the municipal boundary into Nes.
