Drøbak: Wooden Houses, Museums and Fjord
Accommodation in Drøbak
Drøbak is one of the best-preserved wooden-house towns on the Oslofjord. Narrow streets are lined with traditional white wooden houses dating from the 18th century. If you are looking for a hotel in Drøbak, you can choose where to stay based on whether you are most interested in the historic townscape, museums and exhibitions, or activities on the fjord.
Wooden Houses, Baths and Museums
Badeparken in Drøbak has a bathing area on the Oslofjord. It is also home to the restored “Men’s Bath,” which was part of the bathing and spa facilities built in 1900. The park thus combines a connection to bathing with a historic building.
In central Drøbak, Galleri Havstad is located at the historic Abrahamsen farm. Founded in 1996, the gallery combines a gallery shop and framing workshop with art, ceramics, glass, jewellery, and other gift and decorative items. Its offerings therefore include not only art but also framing services and everyday items.
The Norsk Lutefiskmuseum is described as the world’s only lutefisk museum. It shares a building with the Drøbak Boat Association’s Maritime Museum, on the second floor. This brings a museum dedicated to the lutefisk tradition and a maritime museum together under one roof.
Private tours associated with the Norsk Lutefiskmuseum can be booked in the run-up to Christmas. Afterwards, you can, for example, enjoy a lutefisk meal at the traditional restaurant Kumlegaarden. This combination is seasonal and requires a booking, so confirm availability in advance. Tregaardens Christmas House on Drøbak’s market square was opened in January 1988 by Eva and Willy Johansen. Some of the Christmas decorations on offer were designed by Eva Johansen.
Fjord, Wildlife and Special Experiences
Drøbak Aquarium showcases the wildlife of the Oslofjord, including Hugo the wolffish, sharks, echinoderms, starfish, scallops, and tadpole cod. The aquarium has 50 tanks, two large pools, and a touch pool with various marine animals. If the exact layout of the tanks is important for your plans, check the latest information in advance.
Drøbak Sauna is located at Lehmannsbrygga, south of the town centre, and offers shared and private saunas. Visitors can enjoy the sauna and then take a refreshing dip in the fjord. The two sauna options give you different ways to include this fjord experience in your stay.
Historical tours of Drøbak last 60 minutes and can be booked through the Follo Museum. This duration is a useful reference for planning your day; check the latest booking information with the museum in advance.
More Destinations in the Wider Frogn Destination
The Oscarsborg ferry operates year-round within the wider Frogn destination. The crossing from Sundbrygga, north of Drøbak, takes about five minutes. Check the current timetable and operating information before travelling. Oscarsborg was opened to the public as a military heritage site and visitor attraction in 2004.
Håøya is also part of the wider Frogn destination. The island is home to more than 550 plant species, and the “Håøya på langs” trail is around eight kilometres long. The southern part of Håøya is designated as a nature reserve with valuable old-growth forest. All plants and animals on the island are protected. Access to the eastern part of the protected area is prohibited because white-tailed eagles nest there. When planning your hike, check current trail conditions and observe the access restrictions.
