Explore Vilnius through a range of interests: its political history, striking landmarks, scenic views and guided insights into the Old Town. The places and activities each have a different focus—from a historical overview to art in the open air. This can help you plan your stay around the subjects that interest you most.

The city’s history in its buildings and landmarks

From the 13th century until the end of the 18th century, Vilnius was the political center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The city influenced the cultural and architectural development of large parts of Eastern Europe. The Gates of Dawn offer a tangible connection to the city’s former fortifications: they are the only surviving gate of Vilnius’s former defensive wall. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus stands in the city center.

The Gediminas Castle Tower is also connected with Vilnius’s history: it is a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania. On the third floor, visitors can experience what it was like to take part in the Baltic Way. During this major anti-Soviet demonstration in August 1989, nearly two million people joined hands from Vilnius to Tallinn. The city’s history here spans both a long-standing political role and a specific event of the 20th century.

Views and striking forms

The Renaissance-Baroque Bell Tower next to the church has a viewing platform with panoramic views. You can reach it by elevator or by climbing 193 steps. The Three Crosses Memorial on a hill offers a different perspective: it consists of three white reinforced-concrete crosses that are visible from far away. At the Bell Tower, the platform and the climb take center stage; at the memorial, it is its highly visible form. The two viewpoints are distinct, and there is no need to assume they are part of the same walking tour.

Old Town tour: duration and what to expect

The Vilnius Old Town walking tour lasts 2.5 hours and provides a historical overview of the city’s development and the Old Town’s defining features. A professional local guide leads a small group to UNESCO World Heritage highlights and lesser-known places. For planning purposes, the tour answers two practical questions: how much time to set aside and what kind of insights the tour offers.

Depending on the season, the tour offers a selection of Lithuanian treats, including traditional bread, classic cheeses, apple cheese and local desserts. These tastings are part of the tour and are not a general offering across the city. If you plan to take the tour, check what is currently on offer in advance, as details may change.

Green spaces, events and open-air art

Bernardine Garden, formerly known to Vilnius residents as Sereikiškės Park, lies in the heart of the city, between Gediminas Hill, the Vilnelė River and the Bernardine Monastery. Its location is defined by these three specific landmarks. Vingis Park has a different focus: its centrally located stage hosts various concerts, events and festivals. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the relevant dates.

In UĹľupis, the UĹľupis Art Incubator is known for its changing outdoor sculptures and installations. The works change over time, so this description does not suggest that the collection remains the same. Alongside the stage at Vingis Park, this art initiative adds two distinct cultural themes to the historic landmarks: changing outdoor installations and stage events.
