Vilnius District Municipality offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: defensive architecture, the history of technology, museums, traditional crafts and landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay. The places below each have their own focus.

Castles, a manor house and the history of technology

Medininkai Castle stands out for its scale: it has four towers and defensive moats. Its walls are 1.8 to 1.9 metres thick and up to 15 metres high; the main tower, or keep, is about 30 metres tall. The castle underwent further restoration between 2010 and 2012 and was adapted for use as a museum. The historic site thus brings together its past and a more recent phase of restoration.

Liubavas Manor also represents architectural, landscape and technological heritage. Its technological equipment has been fully restored, including a working hundred-year-old water turbine. The Liubavas Manor Mill Museum demonstrates a historic watermill and more than ten other production processes. Examples include woodworking, metalworking, fulling and electricity generation. The museum also presents the history of the estate, as well as the processes once carried out there and the technologies used. Visitors interested in technology will find several aspects of the subject here: preserved equipment, demonstrations of processes and their former uses.

Museums and regional traditions

The Vladislavo Sirokomlė Museum is located in the poet’s former study. On display are furniture, portraits, books and other personal belongings. The setting and exhibition thus draw attention both to the study and to the personal items displayed in it.

At the Vilnius Region Ethnographic Museum in Nemenčinė, exhibits document the everyday life and customs of the residents of the Vilnius region. The museum also holds ceramics and weaving workshops. As visitor and workshop arrangements may change, check the current options in advance. The Čekoniškių kaimo verbų ir buities seklyčia offers another way to explore regional traditions: it presents the culture, customs and traditions of the Vilnius region, with a particular focus on the region’s characteristic verbos and household items. The Traditional Crafts Centre at Houvaltai Manor preserves traditions and old crafts; visitors can take part in special classes.

Landscape, hiking and sculptures

Neris Regional Park lies within Vilnius District Municipality. The area also includes eight geomorphological, two hydrographic, two botanical, two ornithological, one ichthyological, two telmological and three landscape reserves. These different types of protected area offer several perspectives for exploring nature.

For a specific hike, the Dūkštos Educational Trail is a challenging option: the route is five kilometres long and physically demanding. Take these requirements into account when planning your day. The “Vilnoja” Sculpture Park offers a very different combination of art and setting. More than 70 monumental granite sculptures are on display there, both in the landscape and in the lake.

At Aukštojas Hill, there are benches, a car park, bicycle racks, an observation tower and information boards. As the facilities may change, check before your visit. The Europos Geographical Centre is 26 kilometres north of Vilnius, in the direction of Molėtai, between the villages of Purnuškės and Bernotai. There is an information centre where visitors can obtain a certificate of their visit; check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Match your travel interests to your hotel search

The attractions differ considerably in their focus: Medininkai is known for castle architecture, Liubavas for historic technology and production processes, and the museums for commemorating a poet and exploring regional ways of life. Dūkštos combines a physically demanding hike with a clearly defined route length, while “Vilnoja” presents sculptures against a landscape and lakeside backdrop.

Travel arrangements may also play a role. From Lazdėnai railway station, visitors can continue by bicycle or on foot along the tourist route on the left bank of the Neris. As rail service information may change, check it before travelling. This makes it possible to plan visits and routes around the destinations that matter to you, without reducing the region’s different attractions to a single theme for a day trip.
